» pink101 - Recently

.
Another participant, recently used the word, intellectual, in an ad hominem way to put me down. It was as though anyone who is an intellectual is just not up to par with ordinary people and should be laughed off the stage of life. This participant takes such a superior position in opposing others.
.
But, the question here is intellectuality. What do intellectuals do that others don't?
.
Does anyone have any ideas on this issue? My inquiry is serious and not just for the sake of yak.
.
It would be great if several participants would answer the question.
.
happy

» redback - intellectualism

In response to Recently posted by pink101:

Love those -isms. (You did know 'necessitarianism' is a real word!)

I saw the heading 'intellectual' and thought it was me on the radar. happy HEY not for actually being an intellectual but I do on occasions sense a tone that any input from me is entirely for academic purposes...and not to hasten my path towards a required enlightenment of which I must publicly exude a lack thereof.

I'd actually love to sit down over a coffee or whatever...with all who take the time to share here. I'm sure the dialogue would be freer flowing...our meanings clearer. Crikey...I might even understand you. happy

You have traded 'intellectual' for 'superior' in citing words or tone that pull people's chains. I have a friend who delights in riling me up...thinks that's an intended consequence so gains great enjoyment. The era of "robust" argument and feigned offence that used to exist here was similarly offputting to me at great disbelief to the others.

One definition is:
"An intellectual is a person who uses his or her intellect to study, reflect, or speculate on a variety of different ideas."
so maybe the intended put down is you're a wannabee. Or someone's comparison is found wanting.

EEEK! The above definition sounds scarily like me...so the term might just go to quantity not quality, of thought. ABC

That'll do for now.
