So, now, then, that we have rid ourselves of the firey little barbs and darts, can we get back to the issue at hand--Genesis in chapter two?

Always the good soldier. Not to be turned or outflanked. Forward in battle. Good show. As we approach the 48th hour of my deadline, I have determined to go forward also. Gen 2:9 is in the oven about ready to come forth.

Hopefully, migisi will take some sort of stab at it...

Well, if you stop and think about it, you really haven't given your best effort to this little thread. Remembering the book of Acts, you certainly proved that you can give quite an effort when you are properly motivated. So if and when you plan on getting started and bringing the true migisi, the hard working version, it would be appreciated. How are we supposed to know how a woman looks at this book if you are just laying around ignoring your keyboard all day?

So, is Migisi the agnostic or the Atheist and what will your answer make you?

» pink101 - A Christian Culture

.
We live in a Christian culture--or at least it was one until the Evangelicals changed it.
.
How did they do that?
.
By creating tests about what qualified a culture as Christian?
.
Genesis 2:9 you say?

A tree is a most wonderful plant until if falls on you or your house. Or a small bird falls from it and dies. Humanity wishes that God made a planet where everything rolls along without any snags. Everything an uppper. No downers. In the middle of the garden was a tree that gave out some information about how life can embarass, cheat, and even kill us. The story of God and mankind is about to come forth. We aren't really told the science about how tasting the fruit of the tree meant knowing more about all of this. Some things about the beginning of mankind are wrapped in mysteries like the secrets surrounding these unusual trees.

In response to A Christian Culture posted by Brother_Jones:
.
This passage appears to me to be a great example of metaphor.
.
We still speak of knowledge as though it were a tree and we identify the various branches of knowledge.
.
Yet, the literalist mind is dogmatic in its refusal to allow us to think of the tree that bears the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil as having anything--at all--to do with judgementalism. But, Jesus, himself, talks directly to the problem of judging.
.
Existentialism's basic point is that any person is the sum total of their choices. Here is the place where we are offered a choice to see the trees in this Garden of Eden as symbols or as physical trees such as Maple, Apple, Peach, and Fig. And, our choice at this "fork in the road" sets us up for what follows.

.
My personal motivation then was to study a Bible book (Acts) which I really hadn't examined in depth before. We ~have~ discussed Genesis legends and myths before, especially in threads involving Creationism.
.
At the moment, I'm more interested in examining something different... the secular historians Brian has mentioned in his 'Suetonius' and 'Pliny' articles. Maybe after that, I'll jump in here with more gusto.
.
But thanks for the vote of confidence and the encouragement.
.
I've got another busy day and weekend ahead of me. My owls and I will be featured at a Harry Potter Festival tonight. Gotta go shine their talons and beaks, and oil up their leather cuffs. Hoooo hoo.

To use an oft used quote. No need to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The trees do symbolize just like in the New Testament baptism is a symbol but we also get wet. The death of Jesus Christ is also a great symbol of the suffering atonement, but if you had been there you could have grabbed the tree of Calvary and gotten some splinters for sure. Your testimony continues to fly along with such as Spong that just about everything reported in the bible especially when it comes to Jesus, is pure symbolic fiction or elaboration of Jewish myths. And that is not the Christian faith, even though you are deluded into thinking that less than 100 years ago it was. I am hoping to see some improvement in your thinking as we continue on in this great book!

Well, lol. Getting smart isn't like taking one bath. These scriptures can bring out the best in folks. They (the scriptures) also can prove a wrong spirit, even among the likes of me. You have begun to distance yourself so much from the bible, that it really has become a question in my mind whether atheism holds a bigger candle for you. These days some folk are drawn to darkness more than light, because they feel it is all around us.
