In response to Nimrod posted by Migisi:

.
One thing that cannot be overlooked is a wonderment about how long it must have taken for all this stories to have developed.
.
So, could we read Nimrod Version One through Nimrod Version One Hundred and One?
.
A side question might be about when it was formally decided that the "Book" should be closed to further versions and interpretations.

In response to Nimrod posted by pink101:

.
Perhaps they have indeed developed 101 versions of the first Nimrod legend. A few examples: one version is that Nimrod is identified with the Babylonian hero Izdubar or Gishdubar (Gilgamesh); another identifies Nimrod with Marduk, the Babylonian Mercury. Two more theories - one is that Nimrod represents the constellation of Orion; the second that Nimrod stands for a tribe, not an individual.
.
They're all pretty entertaining ideas, IMO.
.
A side question might be about when it was formally decided that the "Book" should be closed to further versions and interpretations.
.
I suppose they had to stop somewhere, or the legends would become far too outlandish to be believable. Add to your 'when', I'd want to know 'who' decided.

» Migisi - Nimrod

In response to Nimrod posted by Migisi:
.
Excerpt from my Nimrod link/post:
"His {Nimrod's] great success in hunting (cites sources) was due to the fact that he wore the coats of skin which God made for Adam and Eve (cites sources). These coats were handed down from father to son, and thus came into the possession of Noah, who took them with him into the ark, whence they were stolen by Ham. The latter gave them to his son Cush, who in turn gave them to Nimrod,..."
.
Um, coats of skins (presumably animal skin) which supposedly belonged to Adam/Eve - which were passed down through how many (?) generations of descendants - each person living from 500+ to 1000 years? Just how long can an animal pelt last?

I was thinking that this Tubal is the one who is said to be the first Free Mason.
.
But, that was Tubal-Cain from chapter 4, verse 22.

.
This is several generations later. That Tubal'cain' was from Cain's bloodline (the, ehem, ~bad~ line). Cain's line was allegedly wiped out in the Flood. However, it's been suggested that Noah's sons married women from Cain's line. This would have 'contaminated' the 'good' Seth line (Noah's) -- and is an explanation for the continuance of evil's existance post-Flood (again, blaming evil on women).
.
According to the Jewish Encyclopedia, names can either be for specific individuals or whole clans. Many names had similar roots - like 'Jabal', 'Jubal' and 'Tubal' are derived from the same root meaning 'to lead', 'bring forth', 'to be fruitful'. And it was common practice to name male sons after their ancestors. Even we gentiles still do this i.e. my youngest son was named after his father and grandfather.
.
In Noah's geneology here, the 'Tubal' ~clan~ (Assyrian = 'Tabal') is always mentioned in connection with the Meshech clan - especially in Ezekiel, who refers to both clans frequently in his description and prophecy against Tyre (the principal city of Phenicia). Tubal is actually the name of a people called 'Tibareni', who lived southeast of the Black Sea.

» Migisi - Ch 10 - Semite focus on Eber

In response to Gen 9:18-19 Noah's sons posted by Migisi:
.

.
(quote)
"The eponymous ancestor of the Hebrews; grandson of Arphaxad and great-grandson of Shem; father of Joktan, the ancestor of the Arabs, and of Peleg, among whose progeny, in the fifth generation, was Abram (cites sources)....
.
"The use of "Eber" as a "nomen appellativum" [common name applied] is common; it denotes originally "that which is beyond." This explains the fact that, in the genealogy of the Semites, Abraham and, especially, Israel are called descendants of "Eber"; for if "Eber" had been originally the name of a person, it would be strange that Abraham should have been so closely linked with him, since Eber was not his immediate ancestor, but one six times removed. It is because "Eber" was originally the name of a region that it took so important a place in the genealogical tree." (end)

Just to further confuse matters:
.
Note there are two descendants named Meshech - one a Japhethite, one a Semite.
And two named Sheba - one a Hamite, one a Semite.

» Migisi - Chapter 11

.
If no other comments, we'll move on...
.
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
.
Remember my post (#1205) back in Chapter 10 where I emphasized these verses:
4: [Japheth's] "...each with their own language"
20: [Ham's] "...clans and languages."
31: [Shem's] "...clans and languages."
.
This first verse in Chapter 11 contradicts those verses.
.
I'll be back later. Time to play with my grandkids. happy

There are 1215 posts in this thread now (counting this one). I think we should start a new thread for the next few Gen chapters (with a link back to this one). Maybe title it 'Bible II'? Agree or disagree?
