We only have 6 casinos in Australia. Maybe the term is copyrighted. Without even getting to the casino, Wednesday's news reported that gamblers where I live lost more than $196 million last year compared to only $8 million in one of the rich suburbs. I love the way behaviour is measured & monitored! Kinda like Titanic watching. "Yep...she's still sinking!" came the cry. ![]()
Any cries of anguish are drowned out by BINGO!!! from the local Catholic hall. ![]()
My hide aint worth much so instead I'll bet YOUR life on it staying with us while ever casinos et al pay hefty taxes to the conflicting interests of the State. That's right...from today smoking is banned in ALL indoor areas and we all know the non-smokers don't gamble the rent away, don't we. But then...they DO bet on flies crawling up walls for a lesser payout.

Tis curious. A great wailing and gnashing of teeth until they realised a smokefree environment may bring families...and MORE money. They reckon the smokers will be blocking the doors so we don't want kiddies skidding on piles of butts onto their butts claiming compo.
But gambling lines blur a bit here. The 2008 Catholic World Youth Day with the Popemobile will be held at Royal Randwick, our premier racecourse. 500,000 expected from all parts of the globe gambling on the fact the taxpayer may foot the bill for lost gambling over the 5 days.

Let the Vatican can foot the bill. The Pope can afford it.

I very much doubt the taxpayer will escape unscathed. The corporation trading as the Catholic Church of Australia pays a percentage of its profits to Rome. A part of the Catholic gamble is to get zero truancy like the Pentecostals are doing here ie more bums on seats.
We currently have about 5000(?) sailors off the Kitty Hawk here for 5 days or so so rumours are rife they'll overspend while they're here. They won't be gambling on getting fair dinkum good ol Aussie hospitality as its a given. But it'd be silly not to bump up the prices on everything while they're here. The gamble in the quick buck.

Hee hee... the Catholic 'corporation'. Ain't that the truth!

What's the exchange rate for the American dollar in OZ these days? Might be good reason to bump up prices - just to break even?

I don't know when it dropped 'Roman' from its title nor the reason, but the Catholic Church of Australia along with other denominations here are in fact registered corporations with their "own" specific legislation.
Time was $US1 = $AUD2. Now, it's closer: $AUS1 = 86 US cents. They'll surely blame the exchange rate for high prices but tell your sailors to shop at Woollies instead.
The fact is, locals get stung with the high prices too.
We have Japanese tourists gullible enough to pay to have their photos taken with an Opera House backdrop. They're told it's an australian Government charge. It's actually charged by the Japanese tour leaders BTW, not us.
