.
I forgive you.
.
I didn't ask your forgiveness. And, my point was complete sarcasm to the Grate One.
.
"...why do you consider dropping atomic bombs on Japan at the end of WWII a mistake? Would there have been any scenario that would have meet your approval? why do you consider dropping atomic bombs on Japan at the end of WWII a mistake?
.
It's not my opinion; but, that of the military experts that counseled President Truman against doing what he did. My understandings are from what I learned during my training at Little Creek, Virginia.
.
.
"Would there have been any scenario that would have meet your approval?"
.
It had nothing to do with my approval; but, the military experts were calling for exploding atomic bombs over the Pacific Ocean close enough to Japan to show them what the possibilities of such an explosion on any of their cities might be.
.
Japan had already lost the war and its leaders were looking for an excuse to surrender.

I posted in the same spirit of sarcasm.

You expressed an opinion that it was a mistake for some reason.. What difference do military experts make on the question? Are you telling me that if some so called military experts that you trust somehow had agreed to drop the bomb, that you would have been okay with nuking men, woman, and children? Is that right?

the military experts were calling for exploding atomic bombs over the Pacific Ocean close enough to Japan to show them what the possibilities of such an explosion on any of their cities might be.

Now you suggest that you might have been in favor of some sort of ruse with atomic weapons?

What's your story on this atomic bomb stuff? Do you oppose the bomb from any kind of religious or philisophical background? You seem to have your face planted into the ideas of the military experts. What gives?

.
From training I received, it was the consensus of the military advisers to Truman that the bombs should not be dropped on cities. What do you want me to say? Should I say that I did not receive such training?
.
My sense on military came to me from my training during the years 1949-51 when the military professionals had just finished World War II. They weren't in love with the idea of war.

Well, I would like to draw some sort of parallel to the last couple of years here at the site when we all struggled with
1 Sam 15. You can't seem to bring yourself to say that there might be some situation that you might give your okay to killing men, women, and sucklings.

It is because of your training?

I serve my country in lots of ways but you know that I did not have the honor to serve like you, or my father, or lots of my relatives. Also, God for some reason (Thank God!) did not have me in service in the Old Testament. But I see a godly comparison. I see men involved in pursuing justice however flawed you might regard your service and that of Samuel.

I have great respect for what you did to serve your country. You know that. This discussion about bombing Japan is a religious viewing from a baby boomer who admits that history cannot really be judged by those who were not there. But I can speculate years later with the likes of you.

No way do I think that I could have agreed to dropping those bombs or have even considered it.

Maybe I don't have a certain kind of strength that you have. I don't know. Just trying to be honest with you.

In response to Ultimate Justice posted by Brother_Jones:
.
My opinion is based on my military training. I hate war. I was taught to hate war in the Marine Corps contrary to the politics of war as it is played out by this idiot we have in our White House. Maybe my training was in retrospect to that war. While I was at Little Creek, part of my training was in boarding and in disembarking ships that were burned out in the Bikini Atoll Atom Bomb tests. They were completely scorched--nothing but rusted iron and steel.
.
I was in the Corps from 1949 to 1951. I knew some old salts who had been all the way through the Second World War. Not a single man I knew or met thought war was a glorious thing whatsoever. I knew several Marines who fought in World War II and after I was discharged and took up a career, I worked with friends who were soldiers in Europe during the war. One was in the Battle of The Bulge and told me about waking up one freezing morning with dead bodies on top of him
.
I was an adolescent and teen ager during World War II and, so, I have a very good recollection of the American attitude of war while it was seething. We wrote letters to junior high school students in Britain as a project in our school. I have personal knowledge gained from those experiences You can't tell me much about war that I don't know. When you hear, blood and guts, that is exactly the way it is--men dying with their gut split open and their bowels in their hands as they gasp their last breaths.
.
I wonder why you thought I Samuel 15 was a good thing to bring up here. Did you think that the people of Japan deserved to be fried like that? What was your point?
.
.
I have had mixed feelings about Truman and the choices he made; but, they all seem to be adding up to the idea that he was some kind of a bad person who exercised his power wrongly.
.
That I Samuel; chapter 15, is used as justification for wholesale murder and slaughter. It's a big part of what's wrong with religionism.
.
It's time to get ready to hit the sack.

War and peace. I don't judge you, Pinky. Neither do I judge God. I do wonder how He got to sleep the night after 1 Sam 15.

I wonder how Bush can sleep--3,500 plus Americans dead in the streets of Iraq and, if he gets his way, thousands and many more yet to die. All for the military industrial complex.

In response to I Samuel 15 posted by pink101:

I think one of your biggest problems with Christ is that you misunderstand almost totally His teachings.

When He said, "they are like white-washed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead men's bones and all uncleaness," He was not targeting a specific group. Or trying to make a point that a few Jews were sorry and worthless.

He was speaking the nature of all men and all women. Gen: 8:21 "for the intent of man's heart is evil from his youth."

No need to wonder why folk like you reject Christ. Your righteousness in your own mind exceeds any need of Jesus. Belief in the good nature of man is pretty ridiculous but it is going to be preached, taught, and shared with passion right up to the time when Jesus returns. Right here at this site in fact.

Jesus is coming back and He is Lord!
