badactor, I'd be interested in your evidence for 1st century authorship of Thomas. See the new thread I started on "Gnostic Gospels."

In response to Point of Perspective posted by BrianTubbs:

.
There are DEGREES of credibility that we can assign to the books of the Bible and also to the apocraphal books and the Gnostic writings and so on.
.
As I see it, the primary issue is - which writings support the tenet of a ~particular~ faith system (i.e. Catholics find the Apocrypha / Deuterocanonicals credible, but Protestants don't).
.
IMO, an equally important issue - the credibility of the church authority who determined a writing's degree of credibility.
.
But to proclaim that ANY ancient religious literature - written by men - is the wholly inspired, literal, and infallible word of an ancient god, and it's the 'absolute truth'? That's way outside the bounds of logic and rational thought, IMO.

There is little doubt that the early beliefs surrounding this Jeshua of Nazareth were a lot more varied than most churches would have us believe.
.
The rejected early writings certainly confirm that. Good to see you posting again. happy

It is a step BEYOND logic and rational thought, but not "way outside of it" and not necessarily inconsistent with it either.

At the end of the trail of evidence and logic comes a step of faith that God calls us to take. However, it's my contention that Christianity is a plausible and credible faith system. Thus, the faith of a Christian need not be a blind, wishful leap in the dark. Mine certainly is not.

One way to boil it down is whether you have a relationship with God or not. I think some of these folks won't attempt to boil it that way, but after a few years of boiling finally look down in the pot and admit that no god is there and no spirituality is ever going to come of their relationships with other folks who promote an empty pot.

I can't speak for you or for anyone else; so, I won't.

But, I can say that it SEEMS to me that any person who has a relationship with God would be so awestruck that they NEVER would judge another's relationship with or without God under any conditions.
.
But, I could be wrong.
.
What do you think about that, Brother Jones?

You are probably right. You make a lot of sense sometimes.

But at other times, I get to thinkin, you know he is pretty doggone old to be going to his grave not sure at all about Jesus Christ or about anything as it pertains to God. Maybe I should speak up a little louder.

Well, Jones, I see that it is all about being alive and being thankfully excited and thrilled just to be alive. Of all the gifts one can receive, the gift of life is greatest as everything else depends on it. Share the joy of being alive.

Anything beyond life is just frosting and decorations on the cake.

I can see why you like to stay at quite a distance from those who choose to think about Jesus and His death on the Cross.
