- How far do we go?
If we answer "Yes" to that question, then we need to understand the logical consequences of that answer. If the right to UNIVERSAL health care is a basic HUMAN right, then that means that all 6 billion people on planet earth are entitled - ENTITLED - to full, universal health care.
In order for all the nation's governments to meet this challenge, they would need to:
1. In some cases, surrender their sovereignty and merge with other governments more capable of providing these services.
You could see the genesis of a one-world government - more power to the United Nations or at least, for the time being, more power to regional governments like the European Union.
2. Raise taxes across the board - thus taking more money AWAY from families and individuals. I understand that my liberal colleagues in these discussion boards have little problem with that, but money doesn't grow on trees. There IS a limit to how much a government can tax its citizens.
3. Possibly take over part or all of the health care infrastructure. If the government considers universal health care a basic, human RIGHT, then it can't fully trust the free market. So, we're looking at socialized medicine.
4. Possibly DRAFT people into the medical profession. If universal health care is a basic human right BUT there aren't enough doctors and nurses, well....the government will almost certainly have to DRAFT people against their will into the medical profession.
But wait...there goes freedom of choice. What about that OTHER "unalienable right" - the one the Founding Fathers put in the Declaration of Independence. The right to liberty? Or, for that matter, what about the right to pursue happiness?
5. Sooner or later, require people to live and eat a certain way. It will become apparent (it already has) that many of our health problems are self-inflicted through poor diet and lifestyle choices. Mark my words....if the government assumes the responsibility of guaranteeing everyone universal health coverage, then EVENTUALLY the government will start managing and controlling how people live - even more so than they already do.
So...before we answer "YES" to Pink's question, let's consider the ramifications.

I think we could take a look at the socialized medicine models in other countries for pros and cons. Maybe Barb Bell (Health topic), or Leonard Hammer (International Human Rights topic) could help? Just a thought.
