I think the fairest and most basic definition of civil rights would be those liberties and/or freedoms held by people in relation to the civil society in which they live. How does that grab you?

So, are one's civil rights violated when they are declared a Marxist by some person with authority in some particular venue?
No. Name-calling and insults, as low-class as they might be, do not represent a challenge to one's legal, civil rights. In fact, putting restrictions on someone else's speech (restrictions to perhaps PREVENT such labeling) would more closely resemble a threat to civil rights. After all, one of the most important civil rights is the freedom of speech.
