The United States will not be launching a war against Iran or Venezuela. Our resources and armed forces are much too stretched for that, and you know it.
.
How about covert action to overthrow Chevez? Do you think the US wouldn't stoop (or hasn't already) to initiating, funding, and organizing a coup? It's been done ~many~ times before in other countries when a leader didn't genuflect to a US president and give in to the corporate vultures.

I don't favor assassinations, except for known terrorist figures. So I would NOT support, encourage, or wish for the assassination of Mr. Chavez. But...

The United States SHOULD have a presence in every hot spot in the world - and should be prepared to influence situations according to its just interests.

As to whether the US should encourage the destabilization of Chavez's government, I don't know. I'm not in a position to say yea or nay to that. If I had top-secret clearance and knowledge of sensitive intel, I could make a better assessment of that.

I will be clear on THIS point, though. Hugo Chavez is a dangerous, corrupt, power-hungry despot and Venezuela would be better off - MUCH better off - with a change of leadership.

How dumb can you get?
.
Venezuela is a "hot spot" because it has one of the greatest oil reserves in the entire world.
.
America wants a presence there because of the oil. You have ignored my references to John Perkins. He spent 31 years as an Economic Hit Man and explains the situation about oil and empire building very well. Check it out: He resigned his position because of his conscience.

It's as plain as the nose on your face. The problem in Venezuela is not Chavez, it is oil.

Re-read my post....

"The United States SHOULD have a presence in every hot spot in the world - and should be prepared to influence situations according to its just interests."

Note the term "just interests." That would include OIL, Pink - at least in my view.

The United States government SHOULD influence the world to protect its economic interests. If it's not doing so, then it's negligent in its responsibility to "promote the general welfare" of the American people!! By the way, that phrase "promote the general welfare" - that's in the Constitution. See the Preamble.

I've held my tongue and shown a LOT of restraint. You've made some very bold pronouncements concerning history when your facts weren't straight. I've never called you "dumb." Please adjust your tone and watch your choice of words. If you want me to show courtesy, I expect the same in return.

I felt like I was following your lead regarding the idea of putting another's position down.
.
So, you are admitting that oil is involved in America's just interests?
.
Do you think that Venezuela has a "just interest" in its oil reserves? Is Venezuela a sovereign state? Can America decide what it wants to do with its natural resources? Does Venezuela have a similar right regarding its natural resources and its form of economy as well as government even if that interferes with America's interest in oil? Do international corporate interests have any legal right to usurp the natural resource of any nation? Does the American government have a responsibility to ensure that corporations be enabled to usurp such resources as we are presently doing in Iraq?
.
To me the word, dumb, means that something is being ignored.

You might want to read articles here on US-backed coup in April 2002.
http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/South_...
.
The United States SHOULD have a presence in every hot spot in the world - and should be prepared to influence situations according to its just interests.
.
"Influence", meaning take innocent lives? A bullet in a body for a barrel? It's really only a 'hot spot' because the US made it one. Chevez upset the international oil cartel when he nationalized oil fields. How odd it is that the crude coming from Venezuela NOW is SO much cheaper to buy than when the international oil companies were producing from the same fields. Like Saddam undercutting OPEC's prices - Chevez HAD to be overthrown for the same reason... profits. In Feb 2002, Chevez fired General Guaicaipuro Lameda as President of govenment-owned Petroleos de Venezuela, alleging corruption. The richest business leaders, biggest labor union, top military men, and media joined against Chavez - all alleged to have been in cahoots with Lameda. On April 11, there was a riot, and afterwards, Venezuelan National Guard claimed they'd taken over the government and had asked for Chevez's resignation. But 3 days later, the coup leadership collapsed, mainly because of the emotional outpouring from supporters in slums and towns across the country for Chevez. Chevez returned - and accused the US of being directly involved in the coup. There's evidence to confirm it, and the US has never denied it. Is there any wonder he's anti-Bush and anti-US? Here we are championing democracy, but trying to secretly overthrow it in Venezuela.
.
As to whether the US should encourage the destabilization of Chavez's government, I don't know. I'm not in a position to say yea or nay to that. If I had top-secret clearance and knowledge of sensitive intel, I could make a better assessment of that.
.
Let's step into Chevez's shoes for a day. He was ELECTED by 60% of the Venezuelan people in 1998, and he retained his presidency through democratic free elections. I'm betting you'd be outraged if it was uncovered that Russia's Putin had funded and supported a coup to topple our government and take out any elected US President.
.
I will be clear on THIS point, though. Hugo Chavez is a dangerous, corrupt, power-hungry despot and Venezuela would be better off - MUCH better off - with a change of leadership.
.
Says you, and Robertson. But what do the ~Venezuelan~ people say? If they agreed, they'd have tossed him out on his ear in August 2004's special recall election. Fact is, he won that recall with 58% supporting him - only 2 percentage points below his 60% win in '98. Apparently, the people want him, Bri.
.
My question to those who believe the US needs to interfere in another country's political affairs: Do you believe in the sovereignty of a nation, and their right to self-determination?

Correction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Chavez... "The United States Department of State and the investigation by the Office of the Inspector General found no evidence that "U.S. assistance programs in Venezuela, including those funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), were inconsistent with U.S. law or policy" or "... directly contributed, or was intended to contribute, to [the coup d'état]."

If interested, this is an excellent article on Venezuela and US relations, IMO.
