Unlike Venezuela, the United States is a democratic society. We still have the freedom to speak out and express our dissent.

For whatever good ~that~ does. We have the freedom to speak, and they have the freedom to not listen.

Do you mean to say that Venezuela does not have democratic elections? Do you mean to say that Chavez assumed power through illegal means? Do you mean to say that there is no pressure put on our congress and our media to tow some sort of a line according to the Bush Administration's desires? Do you mean to say that you have not positioned yourself as a spokesperson for what is and is not representative of patriotism in America?
.
Is that what you mean to say?

Brian?

In response to Protest Vehemently? posted by Migisi:
.
If any of us does not know how the Colonists shut down the king's courts and created their own Continental Association with local assemblies prior to the American Revolution, they should learn about it. There is little more exciting to a Red Blooded American than to know the strength of the American Spirit.
.
Judges and officials who held their positions under the law in colonial America were commandeered by citizens and forced to resign their commissions Those who were slow to acquiese to the demands of their neighbors were dressed in modern fashion for the occasion of their ride in public view. They wore a modern suit of tar and feathers. This history is purposely suppressed in our school books as it establishes a tradition of rebellion against legal authorities. In the final analysis, it is the People that makes the laws.
.
A good example of how the law screws everything up is the current mess with immigration. Our representatives are playing grab ass with each other in their rush to frame the issues involved. The people are not being given options regarding how we might view the issues that include such things as these Fair Trade agreements that are breaking the American workers' backs regarding unions and gainful employment. It's getting to be time for a national uprising. People are pretty upset and are waiting for some way to give voice to their concerns.
.
Yankees can get riled when they suffer from the neglect of their rulers. And, we are sorely being neglected by our representatives in congress and the White House these days.
.
The Voice of the Turtle is in the land.
.
Trouble is brewing.

A government cannot please all the people. Some people will be upset and disappointed with the decisions that the government makes. But, in the USA, we have elections. So, if you don't feel the government is listening enough to you, you can express that at the ballot box.

Does he represent a popular public opinion in Venezuela?

In response to The Voice Of The Turtle posted by pink101:

Pink, timing and chronology are important. The CA took its strongest measures after the "Intolerable Acts" passed by the British Parliament. The US government has done NOTHING approaching what the British did with the "Intolerable Acts."

And, frankly, it's ridiculous that I even have to say that. We have a remarkable amount of freedom in the United States. And the people DO govern in the United States.

Let's discuss freedom in the Great Thinkers thread I've created for that issue.
.
As far as your statement here that the people govern in the U.S., I say, bull.
.
The people governed with the Continental Association assemblies when they forced the king's appointees to resign or face public neglect and contempt.
