In response to Pretense posted by pink101:
I think the ancients ran into situations where things were dour. They wanted the situation to improve; but, had no idea on how to accomplish such. The imagined there was some force that could help them.
.
The rest is history and prayers were invented. We all do it whether we will admit it or not.
.
Yes, whether we are a believer or an athiest we all place faith in something which cannot be proven--especially to one holding the opposite view. It seems pointless, to me, to even try.
.
What you said about things being dour has some validity, but I don't think it even begins to explain why people believe in God. Sit outside under the stars at night, witness the birth of a child, recall the joy and awe you felt when you roamed the fields and forests as a child. These are experiences which, to many, point to Something More, something we don't have to define or explain, but just "know."
peace and love,

begins with the subject imagining that something is true
.
Gotcha. I've never been hypnotized or seen a real session, so I didn't know it began with a pretense.

In a certain sense, making plans so that you can achieve your goals and objectives is an experiment in what-ifs.
.
Often true, Pink. One must 'imagine' those goals being achieved. But is this really 'pretense'?

My dad had a sleep/eating disorder. It was so strange to watch him make sandwiches with his eyes closed, and eat them while snoring. No kidding. He did have a weight problem as a result. So, rather than treat him with reducing diets, they treated his sleep walking with sedatives. Worked like a charm and he got down to normal weight.
