Yes, that was my catechism. Catholics have an in-between place where they wait until the Final Day of Judgement: Purgatory for adults, and Limbo for children. For the dead who aren't pure enough for Heaven, or evil enough for Hell. And intercessory prayers said by the living are supposed to influence God to forgive their sins.

I wish the modern spiritualists were still posting here. I'd like to hear what they think about the benefit of praying for the dead.

What kind of prayers are said during a Protestant funeral service? No praying to God to accept the dead person into God's presence?
