I associate prayers for the dead with Catholicism. I'm not sure, but my guess would be it has to do with Catholic's beliefs about a multi-layered heaven--limbo, and all that. Maybe they want to help the dead person's soul get out of limbo and into heaven?

peace and love,
Paper Turtle

Yes, that was my catechism. Catholics have an in-between place where they wait until the Final Day of Judgement: Purgatory for adults, and Limbo for children. For the dead who aren't pure enough for Heaven, or evil enough for Hell. And intercessory prayers said by the living are supposed to influence God to forgive their sins.
.
I wish the modern spiritualists were still posting here. I'd like to hear what they think about the benefit of praying for the dead.
.
What kind of prayers are said during a Protestant funeral service? No praying to God to accept the dead person into God's presence?

At Protestant funerals I've attended the prayers are for the living, for comfort and hope, and in thanksgiving and celebration of the life of deceased.

Thanks. I attend wakes, but not funerals. So, I don't know what goes on.

In all the time I've been around Christians, I've never heard them pray for the dead. I believe some do but I have no idea why. What's there to pray for anyway?

I've heard them pray for the dead too. That's why I assumed other denominations besides Catholics did that too.
