Ethan Allen was definitely a man among men--independent, expremely outspoken, and politically savvy. The more genteel folks from further south thought he was a little rough around the edges, but they respected him nonetheless.

I took a course on Vermont in the revolution back in the mid-70's. Unfortunately, about all I remember about Allen now is his amazing verastility with the more colorful (pungent?) forms of verbal expression. ;-)
