to give us the freedom to be having this debate today.

What 'debate' are we having here today?

- Glorifying War?
It was implied (make that stated) earlier in this thread that it's preferable to honor all deceased on Memorial Day, not just veterans who have died. To honor just veterans is to somehow "glorify" war. I disagree with that mindset. It's not wrong to singularly honor people who gave their lives fighting for our country.
***For the record, though, I too have taken part in our family tradition of putting flowers on ALL the graves of our loved ones in the area on Memorial Day. We DO take time to remember all our departed loved ones on that day, but we also put a special emphasis on those who served their country. As we should.

Okay. I didn't know we were 'debating'. I thought we were just expressing our personal views and sharing our family traditions.

I did read her letter. I was saddened by it. She lost her boy, and now lost her fire and hope.

If you will go back and read my message again, you will see that I said the ***school's*** observance of Memorial Day glorified war. I did not, for the sake of brevity, describe the what's or how's of the school's observance, but trust me, it was something much more than simply remembering those who have died in battle.
And further, those who are NOT soldiers also serve their country in time of war--in countless ways
But even beyond that, if we are to be fair, we need to remember, while we honor those who chose to serve their country in battle--many innocent people died in the same battle as well, and their lives also need to be honored.
peace and love,

With all due respect, Brian, this strikes me much the same as other's comments about Falwell must have stricken you. To be truthful, I had very little respect for Falwell's * expressed beliefs,* but I would never say "good riddance" at the death of another.

Sheehan is still alive, but--even though you strongly disagree with her stance--she has been courageous, and forthright, in standing up for what she believes in. I feel for her.
