Then why did the Protestants split from the Catholics?

In the modern world, folks tend to leave Catholicism because it is a religion that seems founded on good works getting a person into heaven, while good Protestants emphasize good beliefs get you there.

Is this the reason your ex-Catholic friends gave you for why they left the RC church?
.
I thought this was interesting article (from the RC POV) about why Catholics becoming Protestants. But I'm still confused why a Protestant would convert to Catholicism?

Just a cotton pickin' minute there, Brother Jones.

Of all the things you have posted here over the years you have been posting, your most important point has been that in order to "be saved" and to enter the pearly gates, one must perform certain acts and social behaviors--not the least of which is to exemplify a certain life style that most generally includes church attendance.

Ironic, isn't it. Preaching 'good works' all these years. I think he's really a closet Catholic. You can 'come out' now, Jones. happy

I think it exemplifies the idea that of all the people we lie to, we lie to ourself more often than to anyone else.

And, we live in denial.

Jones just set the hook for his favorite argument: are you saved by works or belief. Since the Bible contradicts itself, it offers no solid answer.

It's an old concept in Fundamentalist circles.

You don't do works to be saved--you do works because you believe and it's belief not the works that saves you. But, if you TRULY believe you WILL do the works.

If the shoe is on the other foot? It's called being slippery.

Probably enough said on that subject. You explain it pretty well. I'm trying to get some focus today. People grow up in highly authoritarian churches like mine, and they generally leave because they get mad at the 'management.' It rarely has anything to do with Jesus. Or the idea that the bible is bogus. Or that the sucklings are mistreated. They leave because they get ticked off at seeing little or no progress in their spiritual lives. And they get disappointed in their leadership.
Add to the factor, what you mentioned Pinky about Churchiness and the structure of being told what to do. Folks leave because they begin to feel deep down in their soul that there might be more God outside their church.

I guess some of the them might be right.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just not getting through to you these days. Let me take another route. In baseball, it just takes one pitch to knock a grand slam homerun, and the game is over and everybody starts throwing the hero up in the air.

In religion, it just takes one guy who loves God and is willing to stay late and pray till morning to convince one hurting person to leave whatever they are doing spiritually and follow him. It isn't really very complicated. And I don't think denomination plays into it that much.

Does that make any sense?
