- If you have to ask...
You ask "why?" If you have to ask, I don't think I'll have any chance at all persuading you as to why. But here goes nothing anyway...
You mentioned Fred Phelps. Perfect example. I preached against Mr. Phelps in my pulpit about three weeks ago. I showed our folks how Phelps takes verses out of the Bible out of context to justify his religion of hate. (I explained, for instance, that the bluntness of the Psalms are there for us to show how blunt we can be about our own feelings toward God - NOT so that we can adopt those hateful sentiments and make them our own).
But anyway, Phelps and his followers (scary that he actually has some) have picketed the funerals of our fallen veterans coming back from Iraq. They were going to (don't know if they did) picket one of the VA Tech victims' funerals.
Not only is Phelp's theology completely out of whack, but his methods are heartless and cruel. Why intrude on a family's grief to make your political or religious point?
Likewise, with Falwell, there's NO chance that the United States of America is all of a sudden going to adopt all of Jerry Falwell's views. If there was a resolution being considered in Congress that would do this, then I could see your speaking up. But that ain't happening.
So, why not back off and let Falwell's family, friends, admirers, and supporters have a week of mourning? It's the classy thing to do.
