» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Falwell

In response to FRED PHELPS on Falwell posted by Brother_Jones:

I find it interesting that Falwell is condemned from the Left as being "hate-filled" and all that. And yet...

From the Far, Far, Far Right (like Phelps), Falwell is condemned for being too loving and lenient.

Many arch-conservatives for example were IRATE that Falwell retracted and apologized for his 9/11 comment. Sad. Jerry Falwell did the right thing in apologizing for that outrageous comment.

This is a sensitive issue for me, because I grew up in that old-timey, rural, narrow-minded, "religionist" (to use a Pink word) community - and I remember hearing Falwell condemned for reaching out to liberals as well as (heaven forbid) Christians outside his denomination.

Many on the Left don't see that side of Falwell.

In response to Give Voice To posted by Brother_Jones:
.
Perhaps any reader might think my purpose is a little too heady; but, it is important to be able to give voice to ideas.
.
Maybe persons on the Christian Right can understand my point when they think about how Pro-Lifers might be thought of as giving voice to the unborn?
.
Another word, articulate, can be used almost the same way.
.
When we are unable to give voice to those ideas that exist in opposition to our own beliefs and opinions, we are acting close mindedly.
.
Can I give voice to your beliefs in my own thinking? Can I entertain what you believe to be the truth? If I cannot, what business do I have in opposing your ideas?

In response to Agree AND disagree posted by BrianTubbs:
.
I agree, although I think Larry Flynt went WAY over the top with Hustler's depiction of Falwell.
.
Sorry. I don't know what you're referring to. I don't read Hustler.
.
Falwell apologized for most of his outrageous, extremist comments. However, I don't think it's "demonizing" people to DISAGREE with their choices and/or lifestyles and/or ideologies.
.
Like Robertson's apologies for his goofy outbursts, did Falwell really apologize, or just try to explain away his verbal violence? You know, backpeddling like 'that's not what I meant' or 'you misrepresent what I said'... faulting the hearer and not the sayer? Was the apology sincere, or just to get the heat turned down on him? I think we can assume that if a televangelist stops making such remarks, the apology was sincere, he learned from it, and changed his ways. But when it continues, it's clear the apology was bogus.
.
I don't think it's "demonizing" people to DISAGREE with their choices and/or lifestyles and/or ideologies.
.
Guess it depends on how one phrases their disagreement, no?
.
The problem with the criticism is that's made from the premise that Christians somehow WANT people they disagree with to go to hell or somehow have the power to send people there.
.
Why do you suppose nonChristians would think that, Bri? Do you suppose that maybe too many 'hell and brimstone' evangelists have preached judgment and condemnation on just about every segment of society?

.
put to rest the myth that Jerry Falwell is a hate-filled bigot along the lines of Fred Phelps (who Migisi mentioned earlier)....
.
Here's what I mentioned:
.
Jones wrote: "From all accounts, like Falwell or hate what Falwell believed, Falwell appeared to believe it."
.
I replied: "Fred Phelps appears to believe what he preaches too - using the Bible to justify his hate. Would you eulogize Phelps as a great holy man - just because he died?"
.
We were talking about singing someone's praises just because the person died. I'm sorry you thought I lumped Falwell in with Phelps. There is NO ONE like Phelps.

The business is life. I imagine there are hundreds of counseling sessions going on this very minute and folks are trying to evaluate their relationships with their Counselor's help. They can look at the problem and give everybody a voice including the kids, but eventually one of the participants (usually the guy) must decide if he is going to sleep in his wife's bed or not.

Exactly.

http://mediamatters.org/items/2004112300...
"Falwell mobilized opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment through his organization The Moral Majority (founded in 1979 and disbanded in 1989). In 1989, Falwell stated:
.
"I listen to feminists and all these radical gals. ... These women just need a man in the house. That's all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they're mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They're sexist. They hate men; that's their problem."
.
Yeah, okay Jerry.

Seems you have something heavy on your mind.

I'm trying to make a point about religious faith. It is not always just about the individual. We came into this world with a pattern that we fit into the lives of others. And when a person decides at some point that God isn't a fit, then His words can no longer be light and life. In most cases they become dread to the person that hears them, because they have decided that God is bogus. And usually with that goes the whole idea that there is God who cares and loves you.
