I don't like Hitchens' manners either. And I said so. But you know, Falwell demonized a great many people without a shred of evidence too. How fair was that? Yet you think him a great man. Whatever.
I'm not really a fan of Jerry Falwell. And if you back over the last several years of posts, you will see that. I did make some remarks about some people who actually came into contact with him daily thought of him. I have been wrong on people before and I think I was wrong on Jerry Falwell. I spent a lot of time listening to what others said about him, and just taken their word for it over the years. But in the past couple of years, I have attempted to check the record and be fair to both opponets and believers. In Falwells case, I found that he actually went out of his way in the last several years to reach out to those who he felt were his opponents, especially homosexuals. And he tempered his politial rhetoric with a lot of good common sense. I am just trying to say that painting every famous Pastor as an Elmer Gantry is not being fair. And the stuffings of Hutchins presentation was flagrant misrepresentation to those who actually followed Falwell and tried to keep an eye on him.
i am just an oldtimer for the Lord.

- If you have to ask...
I didn't know Falwell befriended Larry Flynt, but I'm not surprised. Brother Jones is right about Falwell. He tried to reach out personally to those he once considered his enemies. Did YOU know, for example, that Falwell was friends with... wait for it ....Al Sharpton???
The point Brother Jones and I are BOTH making here is that Jerry Falwell is MORE - MUCH MORE - than the caricature liberals pound away at.

- Falwell's Generous Side
Jerry Falwell did not fit the stereotype many sought to impose on him. He had a wicked sense of humor and he could be very generous. I once took him to a meeting of inner-city pastors and disadvantaged children in Washington, D.C. One young boy particularly impressed him and Jerry asked the boy to ride with him to the airport. The boy told him he'd like to go to college and Jerry gave him his phone number, saying, "When you graduate from high school, call me. You will have a full scholarship at Liberty University." The boy's father cried. So did I.

Lots of universities have philanthropists - many who are graduates of that university themselves. My nephew had his college tuition paid for.

As long as the Christian Right wants to impose its religious ideologies on American politics, there's little chance that secularly inclined folk will back off.

I agree. Once evangelists become politicians, it's open season on them just like any other politician. When they openly demonize just about everyone, they should expect backlash from those they've targeted. They are not above criticism just because they're in the church business.
