- Broader note
I find it interesting that so many people I've grown up with -- people that were mainstays in the news - are now passing away. I guess this means I'm getting older.

The students that I know who attended Liberty knew Jerry as a very humble, warm and loving friend. I appreciated your tribute to him.

- Falwell
I hear you. Several of the students that I taught (when I was in Northern Virginia teaching at a private school) went on to Liberty University. With only one exception (he didn't like the rules), they've all spoken highly of the place. They say "Jerry" is (was) very friendly, very genuine.
I've seen the man in person a few times, and met him once or twice in the past. I can attest to what they're talking about. He was very different from the TV caricature that most people know him as.
Think Al Gore. On camera, Gore comes off as stiff and judgmental at times. In person, Gore is apparently very friendly, gracious, and fun. If he could've changed his TV persona, he'd probably be President right now.
There are a lot of celebrities like that, including Falwell. Even his TV warmth came off awkwardly to many in his audience.
But, whatever people want to say about the public image Falwell had, he was a decent-hearted Christian man. He will be missed by his church and by the students and faculty at Liberty - and by a "silent majority" of professing Christians around the nation.

Who was he? I've probably heard of him but the name doesn't ring a bell.
