I read today that Mothers Day was "invented" by an American in 1870 so is probably one of the nicer traditions the USA exported to OZ. You know...ignore mum for 364 days of the year and buy her an electric drill on her day! happy

Julia Ward Howe's poem doubled as a petition...still timely today:

I was out and about on this sunny Mothers' Day and invariably found myself in the crowd. As equally inevitably, much of the crowd were walking in the opposite direction talking up the entire footpath. But as tired and weary as I was, I helped a lost looking mother and child heavily laden with cases at our city's busiest railway station. Buses replaced trains to her destination so I carried luggage and escorted her to the correct bus stop AND onto the right bus. Memumdbeproud! happy
