He was an excellent author. I'm quite familar with his work.

He was an inmate in the Nazi Concentration Camps, right?

Yes and no. I got the point you were making, but (as is evident from our recent conversations) no one changes anyone else's mind without consent--which is where what I said about the dictatorial communication style comes in.
.
The thing is, though, we are all guilty, at least some of the time, in certain instances, of doing the same thing--and we (as a people) need to be aware of that tendency when we are trying to communicate wiht one another.
.
You say "liberal" and in your mind "liberal" = good thing. Gee Dubya says "liberal" and means "snake in the grass."
.
You and I are being convinced that we have to temporarily give up certain civil liberties in order to protect our nation from the evils of Al Queda terrorists.
.
No. People are trying to convince us that we must _____. Some people find such arguments very convincing, others don't--and those who don't have a duty to speak out.

I don't recall that, and a quick check of the dust jacket blurbs of his books mentioned it. Bruno Bettleheim was in Dachau, and The Informed Heart is based on his experiences there.

I'll just deal with this one statement as it makes my point.
.
We used to call the subject Rhetoric which refers to the way ideas are framed. Framing is the mechanism that gives meaning to words within a context. The ideas of "liberal" has been framed so often as meaning a "snake in the grass" that even "liberals" hesitate to use the word to define their own perspectives on reality.
.
Bush is masterful in the way he frames the concepts he uses in his speaches. And, America is being taught a new way of uderstanding its destiny in the world.
.
Our freedom--the hope of humanity--is being sold down the river on a rickety raft of security that is sinking.
.
Get out the history books and dust them off. Open them up and read them. It's easy to see what is going down.

Yes. I understand what you're saying. I know my history (that was one of my three minors, remember).
.
BUT
.
my world view is a bit different than yours. I'm interested in what I, as an individual, can do to affect positive change (and, hopefully, inspire others to do the same). Just talking about what is happening does not, **for me,** open the door to individual opportunity for action.
.
Think of it this way: one of the most powerful forms of advertising is word of mouth. New ideas get spread because people spread them, sometimes one person at a time. Politicians use word of mouth. So do impoverished entrepeneurs who need business.
.
You have an idea about what is wrong. You spread that idea, gradually, through communicating it to others. I have ideas about how I as an individual need to act if I want to counter what is happening. The two idea sets, and methods of responding, are complementary, not competing.

Yes, but those who hear you tell others, who tell others and so on. Like I said--word of mouth is powerful.
.
You're right, people don't know history, and those who do not learn the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them.
.
But, not everyone finds history interesting. How do you propose to reach those who say, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn"? Just telling them its important isn't going to open their ears.

Maybe we can think of the problem as just one more burden we can cast on Jesus with all the rest that perplex us? Isn't that what we're taught to do?
.
God is still in control and, so, there's nothing we can do about it anyway. Don't even give it a second thought, right?
.
That's how we got to be where we are. Kinda like the dark ages, wouldn't you say?
.
And we have intelligent people telling us, "And, don't you forget it. It's all in [His] book of absolute truth."
.
How can you stand up against such supernatural reasoning? Buy into part of it, swallow the whole thing hook, line, sinker, and camel. Gulp.
