When the Spaniards came here to colonize they brought priests with them, thinking they had a sacred duty to convert the heathen. The French also brought priests, but they were smarter than the Spanish; instead of trying to extinguish the Native's beliefs, they incorporated them into Catholicism.

I often wonder what kind of world we would have had if *both* the Spanish and the French had not assumed that the heathen needed to be converted, and instead had simply listened. We might be living in a more peaceful and enlightened nation.

I often wonder what kind of world we could have here if we stopped assuming the other person(s) was/were wrong and just listened--and maybe every once in a while shared from our hearts instead of shouting and pounding on the podium.
