Repetition of anything, even nonsensical words, gets your mind off your troubles, which is usually helpful when you have them.

When I was a Hare Krishna devotee, there was nothing as good (except for a sugar-filled lunch) as chanting HARE KRISHNA, HARE KRISHNA, KRISHNA KRISHNA, HARE HARE, HARE RAMA, HARE RAMA, RAMA RAMA, HARE HARE.

After a few hours of that, you just flat out had no idea what the heck.

Try that next time prayer doesn't work and give us a report.
