He failed because good people will do the kind of dance we do here at Suite 101 with just about anyone, but when the music stops we all go home with the one who brought them.

Who brought you here, Pinky? Who else but yourself.

We can dress ourselves up in the fancy clothes called religion, and some people claim that the clothes make the man, but we all know who made the clothes.

In response to Verbal Violence posted by pink101:

I would think that rude, but not necessarily violent.

To the best of my knowledge I don't recall ever having said that, if that's what you're leading up to.

I do ignore certain posts (as do we all), but 99% of the time I do so silently.

peace and love,

So, what is the measure of violence, Turtle?
.
Is it in its expressions or in its effects?
.
Is marginalization an act of violence?

There are consequences to behaving badly. In real life those who consistently behave badly have to deal, face-to-face with those consequences. People confront them, or may even punch them. Here on the 'net the only consequence we have is to ignore people when they behave badly. If they still persist, one must conclude they prefer behaving badly to having meaningful contact with someone.

When someone accuses another of being stupid, are their intentions constructive? If the accuser would like to help the other person understand that he is mistaken, do you think calling him stupid will help him see his mistake?
.
It seems to me the person who engages in verbal violence is interested in winning the argument, nothing else.
.
Violence encompases what deliberately treads upon the psychic toes of another--word, deed, or gesture.
.
This is not, BTW my own unique definition of violence.

Its not about censorship--at least not as I see it. Its about taking responsibility for one's words and behavior. And, it also means being responsible and respectful for the ideas one wants to present.
.
If someone presents himself an obnoxious jerk, he is diminishing himself and his ideas.
.
No man is an island, right? We are all connected. What harms one person harms all people. We bear responsibility for the harm we do. So why champion the right to harm others and diminish oneself? I just don't get that.

If I want to be respected for who it is that I am becoming I have to defend you in your right to become who it is that you are becoming.
.
If I put limits on who it is that you can be in my presence, I put limits on who it is that I can be.
.
You might think that is a good idea.
.
I don't.
.
Of course, there are limits. What did we used to say about your liberty? That it stops at my nose?
.
.
:~ )
.
Personally, I like to learn about others. That gives me some perspective on who it is that I am coming to be. I can learn to see my own foibles that I never thought existed. I also learn good things about myself. But, in all of it, I have to learn to accept those with whom I disagree. Maybe they can help me gain some understanding?

I'm finding myself largely in agreement with you, PT. I may not use the word "violence," but I agree with the content of what you're saying. When discussions turn into rhetorical or literary shoving, there's no point to continuing them. This is why I've ignored quite a few in recent weeks - though never from you. I've never felt "shoved" by you. happy

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - One exception

Sometimes, and I guess I've seen this more with men, a good vigorous debate can be healthy. But typically that's when the parties are comfortable in the respect they have for each other. And they know not to take what's said too personally.

And, of course, there's the kind of debates where "verbal violence" (as you put it) is done for humor. Again, so long as the parties involved are okay with that and understand the spirit of it, I see no harm.
