» paper_turtle - Who We Are

In response to Who We Are posted by pink101:

Well, my perception is that you've been kicked around and that you've been badly hurt. I'm sorry for that; but, sometimes we need to go through the white waters of life just to get a better handle on how fortunate we are.
.

True. I've been through a lot in my life. But that was then. Now is good--challenging, but good, very good. In the things that really matter, I am incredibly wealthy.
.
Gradually, we learn that we're all in the same boat. There are those who want us to throw some of us overboard in favor of their own survival. You appear to be one who is trying to be helpful to everyone. You don't like to find fault. That characteristic can blind a person to danger.
.
I do like to help, and I like to approach people (and situations) with an open mind. But I don't hesitate to speak my mind with those who are close to me in my daily life. I am also very good at sizing people up. I've learned who not to trust.
.
You are not one of those here who try to present a false picture of their self.
.

As Popeye says, "I yam what I yam." No point in trying to be what I am not; the truth always comes out anyway.
.
Thanks, Phil. happy
.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle

» HeadZenCards - Who We Are

In response to Who We Are posted by pink101:

The key to a healthy identity, so my keepers tell me after they lock the straight-jacket, is flexibility.

It does not stop me from tensing my muscles as they stuff me in, in a vain attempt to be able to free myself later, but I think they have a point.

Don't limit yourself to your own idea about who you are. Be open and if you find that pesky key, pass it this way.

Accept yourself for who you are?
.
Is that a key?
.
Think about it for a while--it's a blanket statement loaded with assumptions. happy
.
And, it is part of the struggle.
.
Remember what Jesus said about the little children?
.
Do you know that useage of the word, suffer?
.
How about, of such?
.
Am I like a little child?
.
Are you?
.

Anything we think about ourselves *can* be a limitation. For example: Jane thinks of herself as shy and therefore avoids social situations. Or, John, at age 65 considers himself "too old" to learn how to tango.
.
But Mary, also shy, says to herself, "Being shy is cool. If there were nothing but extraverts in the world, we's all soon burn out." And Joe, at age 70, says, "I'm as young as I feel, and takes up sky diving."
.
From the POV of psychological therapy, people are most motivated to make positive changes if and when they accept themselves, flaws and all. Acceptance doesn't have to equal complacency. It simply means you accept as real Iand not altogether bad) every part of yourself.
.
Remember what Jesus said about the little children?
.
......
.
Am I like a little child?
.
Are you?
.

Well, we are all, sometimes, childish. But having child-like innocence, openness, and trust can be something of a challenge--especially for intellectual males. (wink)

Paper Turtle

The totality of Hedzencard's post is great IF you read it as I did...whether or not how I understood it was as he intended it. happy

At times I feel like a 90 year old man when I should feel like a young woman. happy

"Anything we think about ourselves *can* be a limitation." and tis risky to be overly dependent on what others think of me?

I have dumped so much of myself here over the last 7 years, all that's left is to say: Love me, love my dog.

Yuppers--especially if it means we allow the opinions of others to dictate some aspect of our lives.
.
On the other hand, if the clerk at the grocery store constantly closes her line whenever Joe Schmo is in it, Joe would be wise to reflect on why that is. ;-)

There would be queue rage here! We share problems, we do! It's not particularly unusual to simply leave the groceries for the shop to repack. Tis the dag within as I've sworn on oath to do right by all without fear or favour, even if thy name be Joe Shmo! happy

Thanks, Redback.

The straight jacket in fashion this season has a humanistically-inspired, break-away torso section, but I prefer the old-fashioned model. Feels more secure to have a lock on it. If I had the key, I'd probably swallow it.

No more housework for me! People actually feed me by hand!

Have you ever been fed by a hand that really knows how to do it, like our turtle friend? Now let's see if she can focus and clean my chin properly.
