I spent my afternoon hugging my shovel - wrestling out three very old rose bushes that had finally succumb to age. They'd been the focus and pride of my garden for many years... perfect petal and shiny leaf, dark maroon blooms to brilliant white.
.
There they lay, nothing but a heap of twisted roots and hollow gray stalks. I mourned a bit, then dragged them to the pyre out back. My garden was clearly fractured. Gaping holes where they'd been. What to fill the emptiness? Why sure - young happy plants with tender shoots waving at the sun, dancing in the wind, eager to sink deep roots and show their colors.

I too am grateful for grandchildren.
