In response to Today posted by paper_turtle:

Its Mother's Day, always something of a challenge for me. My mother and I have never had a good relationship. Even so, I love her, and I know she loves me. I stopped being angry with her a long time ago, and we can be in the same space without bad feelings on either side. Still, I struggle with finding a Mother's Day card which will show my love but also speak truth.
.
This year I made my own card for her, and in it I said "I wouldn't be who I am, if you were not who you are." That's the truth, and its a good one.
.
Tonight my son is coming to cook dinner for me in honor of the day. I'm really looking forward to that.
.
I'll have a combination Mother's Day/Birthday celebration at my daughter's house on my birthday.
.
Today I am grateful for my mother, and my children.
.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle

May everyone understand that people like PT and my own Mom whose birthdays happen right around Mothers' Day still get to enjoy TWO separate gifts.

We don't, Ollie. Sad but true. I've gotten the 'slash' gift for over 30 years. It's a rip! But there's a plus side.... Mother's Day forces them to remember my birthday too.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. happy

Arlington is way down at the southern border of the state. Its probably about 3.5 hours away, but might take longer since Route 7 is a two way road with a lot of truck traffic. Route 100 is shorter in distance, but no quicker. I live slightly north of what is described as Central Vermont (Barre-Montpelier area).

How so?

It's always interesting that people have problems with their parents and children.
.
But, seldom discussed.

My daughter and I have a wonderful relationship, always have.
.
The ultra-condensed version re my mother: she's a control freak, and she witnessed my father's physical abuse and never said a word on my behalf. I've forgiven her for not speaking up, but it took me a lot of years to learn how to deal with her controlling behavior and not let it push my buttons.
.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle

It was a cultural phenomenon. Women that matured in the fifties and sixties were still heavily under pressure to remain submissive to dominant husbands--not all; but, most "faithful wifes" remained so. Younger women were just beginning to stand up on their hind feet, so to speak in the sense of the fifties and sixties. That's when Women's Lib started up again in seriousness.
