» HeadZenCards - How?

In response to How? posted by BrianTubbs:

Now I'm EMOTIONALLY invested in this debate???

And you don't deem things WORTHY of response??????

(Sorry, I'll slow down, as Pinky would say... :-)

The charge: It appears to be a social class of sanctimonious people who go around proclaiming they have a special hold on God's favor.

Your possible response: Yes, it might APPEAR that way. But look deeper. Why are you jealous of the happiness that God's favor brings to his children? Join us. Drink the kool-aid....

In response to How? posted by pink101:

Pink, your accusation again is that Christianity "appears to be a social class of sanctimonious people who go around proclaiming they have a special hold on God's favor."

You think that's a "pin point" argument???? Are you serious???

You are clearly broad-brushing Christians. You MUST see that.

What evidence can you cite that every single Christian or most Christians (and it would have to be one or the other for your "pin point" broadside to stick) are "sanctimonious"? Even if you say that I am (and you're one of the first ever to accuse me of that - but whatever), that still doesn't make your point. I'm only one professing Christian out of over 2 billion.

If you would be a little more restrained and a lot more precise in your arguments, we would get a long just fine. As it is, I feel like you've been hanging out with Oliver too long now.

It all depends on your perspective, Brian.

I doubt anyone who is sanctimonious would ever recognize the truth of the fact even if it were proven.

In response to Pink, are you serious? posted by BrianTubbs:

Brian, I agree with you.

The great majority of people who call themselves (fill in the blank) are wonderful human beings.

This does not mean that (fill in the blank) is necessarily a good system.

It means that human beings, even if they do not call themselves (fill in the blank) are wonderful all by themselves.

You're finally making an argument that's at least reasonably and respectfully stated. While I don't fully agree with it, I appreciate your tone here. Can't say that for a lot of the other posts - which I've been ignoring.

Anyway....let me be clear on where we agree...

The fact that a majority or a lot of people believe in something (such as God) doesn't make it true.

And...the fact that many/most (whatever) believers in God or in whatever religious system we choose to discuss are "good people" doesn't make the system or belief "good."

We agree on the above two points, Oliver.

So, you're maintaining your position that all or most Bible-believing Christians in the world are sanctimonious. Isn't that a little er...presumptuous...maybe even "sanctimonious" to say?

Where did I make that claim?
.
But, there are those who ARE sanctimonious.
.
Personally, I think most Christians don't have a clue as to what the Bible claims one way or the other.
.
I know of several who go to authorities within their groups with questions that always start out with these words, "[Leader], what do we believe about [such and such]?", and you know them as well.

That WAS your claim, was it not? You referred to Christians generally as a "class" of "sanctimonious" so on and so forth. I'm too lazy to find the actual quote again, copy, and paste it. happy

But, there are those who ARE sanctimonious.

Agreed, and if this is what you meant and/or represents your position now, I won't debate you on it. We agree.

Personally, I think most Christians don't have a clue as to what the Bible claims one way or the other.

Sadly....this is probably true. It's DEFINITELY true when it comes to all those who PROFESS to be Christians.

I know of several who go to authorities within their groups with questions that always start out with these words, "[Leader], what do we believe about [such and such]?", and you know them as well.

Yeah. I don't mind this from young people or newer Christians. And not even from older Christians, except when it comes to BASIC, BASIC questions. Sometimes, I'm like: "You've been a Christian for 30 years and you don't know the answer to what you're asking???"

I think I actually implied that those Christians who post here were sanctimonious and I had Brother Jones in mind particularly. I'm sorry; but, I see him as bigoted hypocrit.
.
That may not be a very P.C. thing for me to admit; but, that's the way it is.
.
I'll say one last thing about it. I think RC needs to see it in print. I can't get the picture out of my mind that he is held in high esteem in certain circles where he spouts off.
.
I think this site is a minor and just waterloo for him.
.
I guess I'm a curmudgeon about that.
.
And, I don't care if the dollies like it or not. I'm not trying to impress anyone.
.
I'm like the dag in that respect.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Point of View and the Internet

In response to Like The Dag posted by pink101:

The problem with these discussions is that we have a VERY limited POV of all the participants. I don't know what you, Migisi, PaperTurtle, Oliver, Wendell, Brother Jones, redback, etc. (sorry to leave anyone out) even LOOK like. I don't know your families. I don't know all your interests and hobbies - beyond what I've read about here. And that - what I've read - is really a limited perspective.

I think we need to be VERY careful about making assumptions and judgments of other people based on simply what we read in text. Brother Jones may seem like a "bigoted hypocrite" to you in what he writes and the tone he conveys in his writing - and that's your opinion of him based on your POV. But if you had the opportunity to sit down with him a few times in person and talk things out - I imagine your opinion would be altered. It's bound to be, in fact.

I say this to myself as well...but we all need to be HUMBLE and careful in the judgments we form of others here at the Suite.
