» pink101 - I Think We're Getting A Clear Picture Of Christianity In Americ

I think we're getting a clear picture of Chrtistianity in America today.
.
It appears to be a social class of sanctimonious people who go around proclaiming they have a special hold on God's favor.
.
It doesn't have much to offer those who don't buy into their ideologies.
.
But, for those who do, well, they can be sanctimonious too.

Just curious, but what are you trying to accomplish with this, Pink? It seems that you and Oliver (especially Oliver - but you as well) just enjoy taking pot shots at Christianity in general and Christians in particular. What are you trying to prove?

Migisi and PaperTurtle usually confine their comments to specific issues. Not you and Oliver. You two just love to fire full broadsides every chance you get.

We are all expressing ourself--one at a time.

Not only do you get to know who I am; but, I get to know who I am as well.

Same with you. You are getting to see a side of yourself you might not otherwise notice.

» pink101 - For Example, Brian

.
One of the things I like about Kaballah, for example, Brian, is the way they are able to discuss the human condition in real time. Present day Fundamentalist (Evangelicalism) Christianity is focused on life as a script written by God and being played out. There has been an extreme movement to explain everything according to Bible prophecy including our current president's maniacal ways. You might not be one who does that; but, it is a popular past time of many populist preachers like Kennedy, Hagee, Copeland, Dobson, Robertson, and many others who use the dominant media to invluence America--even my barber talks about "Pastor" Hagee.
.
Here is a quote from a Kaballah piece,
"A thought is a consequence of desire. Therefore a person thinks only about what he wants and never concentrates on something undesirable." He cannot act differently because desires control him. Our mind and properties are guided by desires. This means that contrary to widespread view, man's head is not the superior organ of the body, but the inferior one. If a person feels pain, all he can think of is alleviating the pain. Any of his desires, to get rid of pain or enjoy something, command the mind what to do.
.
Like the mind of an animal, the human mind concentrates on how to receive more pleasure and avoid suffering. "For example, man never thinks about the moment of his death; on the contrary, he believes that he is immortal because such is his desire." Thus, our mind is a slave to our desire, which always dictates to it what to do. It is not just a cold and intelligent calculating machine, disconnected from desires. It conceals both truth and falsehood, and does everything that desire subconsciously demands from this mind system.
-------------------------------------
(end of quotation)
.
Such statements give room for thought without the browbeating of dogmatic doctrine.

Why are you afraid to respond to the Pinky's remarks?

What are you trying to prove? All you are showing us is that your form of Christianity cannot stand up to criticism (or pot shots as you call them).

Oliver, pretend just for a moment that you're not emotionally invested in this debate - that you're just serving as a referee in, say, a collegiate type face-off. Now, look at Pink's charge...

It appears to be a social class of sanctimonious people who go around proclaiming they have a special hold on God's favor.

How do you DEFEND against that? Not only is it a blanket statement, but it's full of assumptions and loaded words and subjectivism. You can't pin it down to even begin to respond to it. It's a perfect example of a "pot shot" - it's just a hurled accusation. Internet slander. Nothing more.

I'm not "afraid" to respond to it, as you put it, Oliver. I just don't deem it WORTHY of a response - at least not in its present form. If Pink wants to be more specific and back it up with some substance, then I'm fine to discuss it with him.

If you're talking about the abuse and misuse of Bible prophecy, I agree that many Christian leaders have been guilty of this. Looking at your list, though, I'm not sure I see the connection with Dobson. Hagee, Robertson, and Copeland - definitely.

I had written, "t appears to be a social class of sanctimonious people who go around proclaiming they have a special hold on God's favor."
.
To which Brian responded in a reply to Ollie,
"How do you DEFEND against that? Not only is it a blanket statement, but it's full of assumptions and loaded words and subjectivism. You can't pin it down to even begin to respond to it. It's a perfect example of a 'pot shot' - it's just a hurled accusation. Internet slander. Nothing more. "
.
Actually, it is more of a pin point that it is a blanket statement.
.
And, I can see how you might think it is what you say it is. Even so, you most certain have responded to it. In your comment, Internet slander. Nothing more., you insult me in the extreme while, at the same time, you deny I have made a major point which, in fact, I did make.
.
We have seen a lot of sanctimony here in the last several days. And, just so every one knows what I mean when I use the S word, here is how I use the word. Sanctimony, sanctimonious, etc., relates to being hypocritically devout.
.
We're all adult human beings. We all experience life. We all know the basics of our condition. It's time to cut out the falderol.
.
Being dismissive doesn't take care of anyone's true concerns that might, otherwise, be addressed.
.
Brian, you are being dismissive in your denials.
