» pink101 - Son Of A Preacher Man

Son Of A Preacher Man (Hurley/Wilkins)

Billy-Ray was a preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they'd gather 'round and started talkin'
Is when Billy would take me walkin'
A' through the backyard we'd go walkin'
And then he'd look into my eyes
And lord knows to my surprise

The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, yes he was
Oh, yes he was

Being good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I'd try
When he started sweet-talkin' to me
He'd come and tell me everything is all right
He'd kiss and tell me everything is all right
And can we get away again tonight?

The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, yes he was
Oh, yes he was

How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
Takin' time to make time
Tellin' me that he's all mine
Learnin' from each other's knowing
Lookin' to see how much we been growin'

And the only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
Yes he was, yes he was
Oh
The only one who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man

Interesting--an article which posits that religion is good for kids BUT it doesn't interview any children, or talk about how religion might be of benefit to the child, from the point of view of the child.
.
And, it seems to be the article kind of misses the point. Religion, healthy religion, gives one inner resources which help one develop resiliency in the face of challenging situations.
.
maybe the parents of only the best behaved children feel comfortable in a religious congregation.

"There are certain expectations about children's behavior within a religious context, particularly within religious worship services," he said. These expectations might frustrate parents, he said, and make congregational worship "a less viable option if they feel their kids are really poorly behaved."
.
Hmmmmm ..... both my children were physically active and very vocal. They found sitting silently through church very difficult. I didn't force them to attend church if they weren't up for it. The thing is, though SOME churches really don't like children all that much. They frown at even the least little bit of innocent noise. I knew I had found the right church home when a child burst free of his mother's arms, ran to the front of the church, and hugged the minister's legs. The minister hugged the child back. The congregation laughed and smiled through the whole incident. The minister allowed the child to stay at the front of the church until it was time for the children to go to Sunday School.
.
But not all churches are like that, some want children to be little automatons with toggle switches that can be turned off and on--complete silence and somberness in church, and preferably until the child has left the church grounds as well.
.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle

That's a really cute story. I like it! The ironic thing is that JESUS did basically the SAME thing - and yet some churches STILL have this "Children are to be seen and not heard" mentality.

Gen. 19:30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

19:31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will LIE WITH HIM, THAT WE MAY PRESERVE SEED OF OUR FATHER.

19:33 And they MADE THEIR FATHER DRINK WINE THAT NIGHT: and the firstborn went in, and LAY WITH HER FATHER; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

19:34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and LIE WITH HIM, THAT WE MAY PRESERVE SEED OF OUR FATHER.

19:35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; AND HE PERCEIVED NOT WHEN SHE LAY DOWN, NOR WHEN SHE AROSE.

19:36 THUS WERE BOTH THE DAUGHTERS OF LOT WITH CHILD BY THEIR FATHER.

Is religion a good thing for children? Depends what you mean by religion.

Just don't let your kids read the Bible without proper adult supervision!

Heh heh. We worry about violence on TV? Imagine the kiddies reading about the binding and near murder of Isaac by his dad, and the human sacrifice of Jephthah's daughter because she walked through the door first. But the worst... It was the Father's will that Jesus be brutalized and killed. Could they ever trust their daddy again?

Thank Daddy that most Dad's are not like the LORD GOD or Lot!

Keep intolerant nonsense disguised as "truth" away from kids! Let kids know that Jesus and God are fairy tales like Santa and the Easter Bunny (and Godzilla)!

Cute.:) At my old church the kids always got into the Praise and Worship. One kid even used to play the air guitar. At my current church the kids get into the Praise and Worship more than the adults.

Exactly. Keep nonsense disguised a "truth" like "Let kids know that Jesus and God are fairy tales like Santa and the Easter Bunny (and Godzilla)" away from our kids. That can really damage them.

"...And, it seems to be the article kind of misses the point...."

The article is an selective overview of the research. I'm from the school that reads the research and compares the conclusions. I couldn't track the research itself down.

Hefty research implied...16,000 kids. But how many adults surveyed and what percentages "proved" the points made? How many parents of 4 or more kids etc. Teachers' knowledge?

"...instead of religion having a positive effect on youth, maybe the parents of only the best behaved children feel comfortable in a religious congregation..."

There's probably too many variables to better explore the points you raise, PT.

Back when I was a kid, we marched across town to the Salvation Army citadel and were caned if we misbehaved. The officers were so 'comfortable' about our behaviour, they dozed off in the back. My earliest recollections of the 'rolling eyes syndrome'. happy
