Then how do you account for all the passages in the OT and NT which talk about feeding the hungry? do you think if someone was hungry, a Jew in OT times or a Christian in NT times would have made the person pass a work test before feeding him? I don't.
Did you know that when OT Jews harvested their crops they left the edges of the field unharvested so that those who were hungry could go in and glean what was left over? Do you think they posted sentries to see to it that all passed the work test? I don't.
.
Early Christian communities were rather communistic in character:
.
The community of believers were of one heart and one mind. None of them ever claimed anything as his own; rather, everything was held in common. With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great respect was paid to them all; nor was there anyone needy among them, for all who owned property or houses sold them and lay them at the feet of the apostles to be distributed to everyone according to his need. (Acts 4:32-35; see also 2:42-47)
.
According to his need, not according to his work.
.
peace and love,

Except on the Sabbath. The hungry were required to stay hungry. (Mat 12:1-2)

- Nazis?
I'm aware of the history, Phil. I know that the work camps were used to supply the German war effort. Hence, my point about how they were exploitative.
What I find irrational and offensive is your implication that, because the Germans threw up that slogan "Work Makes You Free" over the concentration camps - they therefore become representative of the philosophy that those who don't work shouldn't eat.
The Nazis were forcing the Jews to work for the German war effort. They were NOT forcing the Jews to work for their own livelihood.
The philosophy - "Them that don't work, don't eat" - speaks of people being required to contribute to their own health, safety, and welfare. That is NOT a Nazi concept, Phil. It's a sound one.
Please don't shove the Nazi thing at me again.

You can't have it both ways. You associate Nazism with the sentiment of II Thessalonians 3:10 - "...that if any would not work, neither should he eat."
But then turn around and say "Hey, ask a conservative" when PaperTurtle points out the REPEATED biblical injunctions to care for the poor and needy.
This is the kind of debating tactic that you occasionally use (and that Oliver pretty much ALWAYS uses) - and it infuriates me. Stop holding up the Nazis and other inflammatory examples to cast discredit on the Bible.

- Sabbath
The very passage you cite (if you continue reading) shows how Jesus corrects the Jewish leaders for misapplying the Mosaic Law concerning the Sabbath.
