Then how do you account for all the passages in the OT and NT which talk about feeding the hungry? do you think if someone was hungry, a Jew in OT times or a Christian in NT times would have made the person pass a work test before feeding him? I don't.

Did you know that when OT Jews harvested their crops they left the edges of the field unharvested so that those who were hungry could go in and glean what was left over? Do you think they posted sentries to see to it that all passed the work test? I don't.
.
Early Christian communities were rather communistic in character:
.
The community of believers were of one heart and one mind. None of them ever claimed anything as his own; rather, everything was held in common. With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great respect was paid to them all; nor was there anyone needy among them, for all who owned property or houses sold them and lay them at the feet of the apostles to be distributed to everyone according to his need. (Acts 4:32-35; see also 2:42-47)
.
According to his need, not according to his work.
.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle

Except on the Sabbath. The hungry were required to stay hungry. (Mat 12:1-2)

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Nazis?

In response to Nazis? posted by pink101:

I'm aware of the history, Phil. I know that the work camps were used to supply the German war effort. Hence, my point about how they were exploitative.

What I find irrational and offensive is your implication that, because the Germans threw up that slogan "Work Makes You Free" over the concentration camps - they therefore become representative of the philosophy that those who don't work shouldn't eat.

The Nazis were forcing the Jews to work for the German war effort. They were NOT forcing the Jews to work for their own livelihood.

The philosophy - "Them that don't work, don't eat" - speaks of people being required to contribute to their own health, safety, and welfare. That is NOT a Nazi concept, Phil. It's a sound one.

Please don't shove the Nazi thing at me again.

You can't have it both ways. You associate Nazism with the sentiment of II Thessalonians 3:10 - "...that if any would not work, neither should he eat."

But then turn around and say "Hey, ask a conservative" when PaperTurtle points out the REPEATED biblical injunctions to care for the poor and needy.

This is the kind of debating tactic that you occasionally use (and that Oliver pretty much ALWAYS uses) - and it infuriates me. Stop holding up the Nazis and other inflammatory examples to cast discredit on the Bible.

Well, I'm sure the Nazis used a lot of good and common sense in many things they did; which, isn't to laud them in any way.
.
They were fascists--of the worst kind; but, they also had some good ideas.
.
Regarding history, I'm sure you are aware that communism caused the unspeakable deaths of a hundred and ten million (110,000,000) human beings from 1950 until the end of the century--at least. The German Nazis were aware of the threat communism presented to the world and wanted to wipe it off the face of the Earth. A case can be made that the Nazis had a good cause in that case.
.
The truth is that both systems are bad. But, we have to give the Devil his due sometimes and that doesn't mean he's a good guy now, does it?
.
I think some very honest Germans believed that the people in those work camps who didn't work, deserved to be starved to death. What would you think if your baby wasn't getting any milk and some concentration camp worker who was opposed to your country's success was being well fed?
.
