It's obvious that Reagan's place in having an influence on American society is far above JFK's. Our present situation is indicative of that. Who, really, was Reagan? You have left several questions unanswered, Brian. No one should have to point them out to you.
.
But, JFK was on the way to becoming the greatest president our society has ever known in so far as courage to stand up against the oppressor is concerned.

First, we were off on a few tangents in this thread - a couple of which YOU started, Pink. happy Second, I combed back through a few pages of THIS thread to see what questions I've left unanswered - and I found only ONE....this one....

..the right to own property is not a property right now, is it, Brian?

I'll answer it in the next post.

For now, though, Pink, I'll simply say that I do the best I can in these threads. Yes, some questions slip through the cracks. Sorry about that, but it happens. If you're not willing to point out the ones that I've missed, well...that leaves us at an impasse.

I figured you didn't care much for Reagan. I think your perspective on him is rather limited. Yes, there's Iran-Contra. Yes, there are the deficits. But...there's quite a bit more to his legacy than that, which all of his more fair-minded biographers have recognized. Even Democrats have grudgingly conceded in the last 20-30 years that Reagan is worthy of our esteem and respect.

..the right to own property is not a property right now, is it, Brian?

Answer: I've always defined "property right" as a "right to own property." I don't believe that property itself has rights - only the person who OWNS that property. Property comes in different forms -- land, cash, stock, electronics, firearms, etc. We have a RIGHT to own property and to have that property PROTECTED by our government. This was among the central premises of the American Republic - at least according to those dead white guys we call the Founding Fathers.

In response to Reagan posted by BrianTubbs:
.
Actually, when Reagan was running for the nomination, I was reading a book on leadership by one of Jimmy Carter's advisors.
.
And, I remember how George H W Bush bullied his way onto the ticket like Johnson drove his way on to the Kennedy ticket. I don't like the Bush family. Reagan, I thought, was sort of an honest man--common with no axe to grind.
.
The Bush and the Kennedy families represent two diverse sides of the American Spirit. The Kennedys are the good guys and the Bushes are the bad guys. I think these two families have fought each other in the arena of life.
.
It would be such a great thing if there were a God who would bring justice to our land.
.
There are some very good studies into the assassination of the Kennedy family members--two brothers and a son. Three of them. Very sad for America. I can't imagine how it must be for the family.
.
John Kennedy was a great president with the emphasis on great.
.
I963 changed my life in a very hard and real way. We lost our innocence that year.

It has been said that if JFK hadn't been killed, he would've gone down in history as a mediocre President at best. I'm not sure I agree, because it's purely speculative. But I do believe (from a HISTORICAL perspective - meaning compared to ALL 43 of our Presidents) his presidency has been overrated.

I'm not saying that his impact on your life, PaperTurtle's life or even on the 60s has been overrated. I will admit up-front that John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy were the dominant figures of the 1960s - at least in terms of capturing the hopes and aspirations of the American people.

In response to JFK posted by BrianTubbs:
.
I think a person has to have some vision in order to imagine what a president might have been.
.
For me, the important factor has to be understanding why Kennedy was assassinated. The persons who killed him were not so concerned about him as they were about the impact he was having on the direction in which he was about to take America.
.
But, that's speculation just as the insults of medioctrity are speculations.
.
He represented wealth that was concerned about ordinary people--something very rare among wealthy people.

In response to JFK posted by pink101:

LBJ had no choice but to have JFK killed. JFK was consorting with an East German spy. All our secrets were in jeopardy of ending up in the wrong hands. Or that's what my sources tell me, anyway.

Notice how much time Brian has to spend chatting about anything but the LORD GOD and his demand that his followers kill children!

I doubt that LBJ had anything to do with Kennedy's assassination other than being some kind of a diversion.

It seems more likely the culprits are currently in control of America's destiny. Who could THAT be?

There's more than a little evidence.

Well, I forgot to mention how many farmers were put out of business by his "reforms" of agricultural policy. Vermont is a rural state--this hit us very hard. And I forgot how he messed around with social services programs (for children, in partiuclar), and how his measures still force social service workers to spend time raising funds rather than actually helping people in need.
.
I respect *any* person simply by virtue of his/her being alive. But esteem is something which has to be earned. Sorry, can't make myself say "esteem" and "Reagan" in the same sentence.
.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle
