» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Hays

In response to Socialism posted by pink101:

Easy there, Pink. Everyone has their opinions about who the most important figures are in history. Like most US history teachers, I had ONE school year (which is not a full calendar year) to cover 400 years of history. That's of course just the European settlement part of it. Go back further to give the Native Americans their due coverage, and you have even less time. So, don't rap me for not giving more time to Mr. Hays. Okay?

Anyway, to answer your other question. Yes, I've seen Inherit the Wind - several times in fact. And I own the film. And I showed parts of it in class.

In response to Cud chewing posted by pink101:
What are you talking about? I thought we were talking socialism, and Oliver brings up cud-chewing. I'm trying to figure out where he's coming from - and why he's even bringing that up. And then you ask ME if I want to change the subject. You're not making much sense with that. Are we talking socialism or are we talking about cud-chewing in Deuteronomy?

Oliver lives here as a resident in the mental institution. His cubicle is just down the hall from mine. You must understand he is apt to go off in strange directions from time to time. Especially if he is off his meds.
.
And, so you have to forgive him.

Getting back to Mr. Hays...

What is it about him that you find so significant for our discussion here, Pink?

His life's work seems to have been aimed at seeking justice for all people. I guess I see him as one of those socialists who was instrumental in the acquisition of many benefits we enjoy in our present day system.

Much happened in American society during the early third of the twentieth century.

Socialism pertains to Hays, hay makes the best cud, except that rabbits don't chew their cud, even if the Bible says they do.

Okay. It's just interesting that you singled him out. But, okay.

Much happened in American society during the early third of the twentieth century.

Yes, but the same could be said for the middle part of the 20th century and the latter part of the 20th century. In fact, the same could be said for the latter part of the 19th century, the middle part of the 19th century, and the early part of the 19th century. And...the latter part of the 18th century....

I don't know about that.
.
I was well into life in the middle part of the century. I went into the Marine Corps in 1949; was married in 1953 and a father in 1956. There was a great deal of social stability in that issues were being solved as they moved in a steady direction toward improved conditions for everyone.
.
I think the 1930s provided the national leadership with an opportunity to settle much of the earlier unrest that had plagued the American worker.
.
Now, I think conservativism is on the retrograde and that there is a TREMENDOUS effort to take away many of the major benefits that had been won by the efforts of socialists during the earlier part of the twentieth century.
.
Conservativism seems to be closely related to the flow of religious fervor in American society.
