» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - What We Are

In response to What We Are posted by pink101:

Historically, the outcome of the American Civil War (which strengthened the industrial, commercial North)** combined with the Industrial Revolution led to the capitalist excesses you cite. And those excesses triggered a populist backlash. The 1896 presidential election represented the electoral high water mark of this movement.

**Before you jump on me, I'm glad the Civil War turned out with a northern victory. However, PART of what the South feared indeed did come to pass with the North's victory.

Communist and socialist agitators (mainly the latter) did contribute to the populist movement which brought about much needed reforms. However, mainline populists like William Jennings Bryan (from the Democrat side) and later Teddy Roosevelt (from the Republican side) were much more pivotal and influential.

Jesus' message has always seemed very socialist to me. Glad to see you standing up against that kind of kindness!

Dear me, have I torched another strawman?

» pink101 - What We Are

In response to What We Are posted by BrianTubbs:
.
These leaders would not have surfaced were it not for the upsurge of popular sensitivities to the injustices being worked on Humanity. They personified the people who voted them into office.
.
The 1896 political campaigns were important for the way they changed the centers of communication in our society.
.
The election of 1912 was important in that it put four men on the docket each of whom epitiomized the struggles that were emerging. My point is that without the socialists and the communists, the big money interests would have never been slowed down--the anti-trust actions wouldn't have taken place. Capitalism would have continued to subjugate the working classes just as they are now doing under the resurgen Republican Party's return to that hateful comservativism against which humanity has struggled. Unless Progressives (Liberals) are able to turn the tide, we're all up the creek except for the super wealthy.

In response to Socialism posted by HeadZenCards:

Jesus does indeed represent a serious moral challenge to greedy capitalists who are only out for a buck - especially those trying to get a buck at the expense of others.

The ideal society would be one made up of voluntary socialists living in a capitalist economy.

Wow!

And, both in the same post.

Greedy Capitalists & socialists living in a capitalist economy. Uh huh--exactly. That sounds like the period of time in American up into the 1930s. But, you forgot the sprinkling of communists who added the necessary push to the continuing reform movement in America.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Private Socialists

In response to Jesus and Socialism posted by pink101:

I am, of course, referring to private socialists - meaning people who VOLUNTARILY use their riches to better others. The Bible speaks against greed, and if all rich people, business owners, capitalists, etc. adhered to those teachings....They would see their money as an OPPORTUNITY to help other people - and do so. That would make for an ideal world - at least economically.

That's not socialism.
.
During the late middle ninteenth century the robber barrons and lumber barrons where shamed into letting loose with some of their ill gotten gains. Is that what you mean by your brand of socialism?
.
I'm talking about things like Social Security, Universal Health Care, Free Schools, and minimum housing standards for every person. Issues that the Workers Poverty Agency (WPA & NRA, etc) dealt with in the 1930s.

Ironic that you say we shouldn't legislate morality in one thread, and yet you have NO problem with the forced redistribution of wealth through government programs.

Be that as it may, I'm not sure I would define government services to be "socialism." There are some libertarians that would, I'm sure, but I'm no libertarian.

I believe there are certain aspects of life that are personal in an intimate sort of way and others that are more public.
.
We have grown up in a society in which phrases like, forced redistribution of wealth, come down on us like something out of tyranny.
.
What words do you use to define the legislated redistribution of employement opportunities from American cities to China and other countries where workers are paid far less in money and benefits?
.
