» pink101 - Speaking Of American Freedom

.
Speaking of religious freedom in America, here is an interesting story that is developing in Switzerland:
.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/667627...
.
How would you like one of those towers down the street from your house with some religionist calling everyone to prayer?
.
I'd blow the damned thing up. That's what kind of a tolerant person I am.
.

The article says: "Mr Karaademi is also bitter at what he sees as unfair discrimination against his faith. "I even gave them a written undertaking that we would never make the call to prayer," he said."
.
When a Christian or Catholic church rings its bells on Sunday, it's calling everyone to prayer. Right? Are church bells banned in Switzerland?

I'm a Yankee, Brian. Through and through.

My ancestors were in Rutland, Vermont, during the time of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys. I'm sure that's where I get my Yankee oneriness. Do you think?

Uh huh, sure, yah. A religionist giving his word for the entire congregation.
.
I can see it now.
.
I don't want to hear some yahoo crying out over the town reminding everyone to get out their prayer rugs and to go down on their knees in prayer--or else. I don't know, do they get away with that in Dearborn, Michigan?
.
I think that would be an invasion of my privacy.

A religionist giving his word for the entire congregation.
.
The imam ~does~ speak for the entire mosque congregation. He's the ~only~ one who can. It's not like a Christian church having a board of elders or a member vote. And not just anyone can climb onto the minaret balcony and start calling folks to prayer.
.
I don't want to hear some yahoo crying out over the town reminding everyone to get out their prayer rugs and to go down on their knees in prayer--or else.
.
Doesn't mean you ~have~ to grab a rug and pray - any more than you have to "repent' when the Christian evangelist with a bull horn on the street corner says you have to.
.
I think that would be an invasion of my privacy.
.
Heh heh. You still think you've got privacy to invade? That went out with the social security number and the bar code. The final blow was the Patriot Act.
.
From the article:
"We don't have anything against Muslims," said Oskar Freysinger, member of parliament for the Swiss People's Party.
.
"But we don't want minarets. The minaret is a symbol of a political and aggressive Islam, it's a symbol of Islamic law. The minute you have minarets in Europe it means Islam will have taken over."
.
They allow steeples on Christian and Catholic churches. Same thing as a minaret, really. This minaret being opposed is only 15 feet tall. It's not the Tower of Babel. It's clear to me that Oskar and others calling for a ban obviously ~do~ have something against Muslims. Oskar's last remark tells all. It reminds me of the kind of ignorant comments we heard about blacks back in the civil rights years ... "if you let them niggers ride in the front of the bus, they'll take over the country."

I think the problem with both Islam and Judaism as well as some Christian organizations is that they believe their laws supercede civil law.
.
If the Christian church down the street was sending out loud speaker messages to the community to gather for meetings, I'd be just as riled as I would with some Muslim or Jew doing the same thing. For my money, they should chuck it when it comes to being in my face.

» pink101 - A Discussion On American Freedom

In response to Speaking Of American Freedom posted by All Participants:
.
I would like to be involved in a discussion about the ideas of freedom--what it is and how it works.
.
I think it can be a topic of great interest that can be held in a fair and open way regardless of ideologies that might--otherwise--drag us into conflicts.
.
Freedom is an especially important issue about which Americans are very confused.
.
I have opened a discussion thread here: http://greatthinkers.suite101.com/discus...
.
If participants would give me a few responses, I think I can show you it is something about which you ARE very interested.
.
:~)

The American Freedom is to believe or NOT to believe, especially in a "god" that would destroy you if it could.
