He's speaking metaphorically, Phil. I think you know that. I think you also know in standard everyday English people use "heart" as a metaphor to express all kinds of emotions:

My heart wasn't in it
I followed my heart
I didn't have the heart to tell him
He has a big heart
My heart overflowed
My heart was filled with joy
He nursed anger in his heart
In your heart of hearts you know
He has the heart of a lion

I could keep on for quite a long time.
