Don't feel too bad Phil; a lot of my posts from yesterday got totally ignored. We liberals have to learn not to be so touchy, right? ;-)

Yeah, we are kind of a loquacious (and slightly unruly) bunch, aren't we? But c'm'on--that's part of our charm. Right?

» HeadZenCards - Analyzing Oliver's screed

In response to Analyzing Oliver's screed posted by Migisi:

What is the purpose of Matt. 7:21-23?

Jesus-As-Written wanted everyone who expected his help after physical death to do the LORD GOD's will during their life.

Why are the Old Testament stories of the LORD GOD's brutality left in a book about Jesus?

IMHO, it is to make us feel OK about the brutal things we have to do to get by in this world.

And don't worry about them: Jesus died horribly so that He can speak up for those who did His Father's will here on Earth.

You are doing what His Father willed you to do here on Earth, aren't you?

Bless you and Brian and Pinky and everyone else who has a hard time defining what the LORD GOD's will is.

Honest doubt is mankind's only hope to rid itself of violent religions.

Frankly, I'm not interested in analyzing Ollie (or anyone, for that matter), but far more interested in the issues being raised. If I can't make sense of what someone's saying, it's my fault for not asking enough clarifying questions.

» HeadZenCards - The Will of the LORD GOD

In response to Waaaah, Waaaah! posted by Migisi:

Deut. 23:7 Thou shalt NOT ABHOR AN EDOMITE; for he is thy brother...

It is the will of the LORD GOD that those from Edom not be abhored. All believers in the LORD GOD should be kind to them from Edom.

2 Kings 14:1 In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah.

14:3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD...

14:7 HE SLEW OF EDOM IN THE VALLEY OF SALT TEN THOUSAND....

In the above verses, the will of the LORD GOD is that we not abhor the Edomite, but, if we happen to kill 10,000 of them, we are doing right in the sight of the LORD.

No wonder Matt. 7:21-23 causes True Believers to be quiet! The will of the LORD GOD is unclear.

It is clearer here:

Deut. 23:1 He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

Why is that? Whose job is it to check such things? Is this verse what modern clergymen accused of sexual daliances with young boys use in their defense?

Forget Ollie, he's just having a bad month. He'll slow down.
.
THIS is the post I'm talking about.
.
In response to Theory posted by paper_turtle:
.
I think you're mostly correct on these points.
.
One of the problems that comes up as a result of the Higher German Criticism that developed late in the ninteenth century has to do with the rise of Fundamentalism (capital F) that is, in turn, the outgrowth of the former Traditionalism. Millenialism--a previous and strong movement of the ninteenth century--must also be taken into consideration for it created the major problem when variouis "prophets" came to be the laughing stock of the media of the day. What had happened was that scientific discoveries and, mainly, the Darwinian Theory of Evolution were percieved as devasting attacks on Christianity. A wagon circling mentality developed and the "Iron War Horses of God" started to make demands that the problems made in prophecies about the Second Coming were not the Bible's fault; but, they were the fault of humans imperfectly interpretation scripture. In other words, the Bible actually DOES trump science; but, we don't truly interpret it's veracity.
.
The Result? The Bible came to be seen as the Revealed Word of God in a popular way. Before that, it had been seen almost exclusively as The Good Book and not to be taken literally. Now, the battle lines were drawn.
.
As the twentieth century dawned, a couple of men made heavy inroads into the American mindset regarding Christianity--C. A. Briggs and H. E. Fosdick. Briggs was noted for Higher Criticism and Fosdick for Modernist Theology. These two we very instrumental in setting the stage for a new revival of human efforts at living in a Christianized world of a progressively improving society--what some refer to as the Social Gospel.
.
It doesn't take a lot of effort to advise one's self with an understanding of the time period involved during the changeover from the ninteenth to the twentieth century. Those fifty years or so are highly significant to our understandings of how we got to be where we are now. They impinge on our discussions in these various threads. I don't see how anyone can intelligently discuss the issues without some circumspect understanding of the founding problems laid down by Fundamentalism.
.
We still see cartoons of strange looking men standing on street corners with signs reading, "The World Ends Tonight", or tomorrow or soon or some such nutty thing. And there are preachers who get all psyched up about the end of the world.

When I was a child, the Bible was the Good Book. This was before I could read, of course.

Hey...I don't believe this! All you guys saying your posts are ignored? You're all ganging up...having a lend of me, right?

I go back 10, 20 or so posts each time I enter these hallowed halls to avoid the offence of ignoring someone..and am only as good in that as my computer and arthritic fingers allow. Besides, trying to respond to posts here at times is like answering last year's mail...a tad too late.
