» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Heart and Mind

I think there IS a very important distinction between HEART and MIND. They often get collapsed or blurred.

I do think it's appropriate to correct or at least debate each other on DOCTRINE (mind), but not so on HEART. Unless it's an extremely obvious thing.

To respond directly to you, PaperTurtle, I would never presume to comment negatively on your HEART. And, I should point out, that the Bible makes clear that God looks FIRST AND FOREMOST at the heart. And Jesus made that clear time and again when talking with the Pharisees. I in fact respect you tremendously when it comes to your heart.

But, yes, I do think you're misguided in your mind. happy

Seriously, I disagree with you on many of the issues of doctrine, but that doesn't mean (speaking for myself of course) that I'm going to view your heart or character negatively.

Does that make sense?

Yes, that makes sense. We both have different understandings of what it means to walk the walk. Our understandings arise in no small part out of who we are--our experiences, what we have learned, and the gifts and inclinations with which we were born.
.
Its OK to disagree. Its OK to believe, in the privacy of one's own heart, that our way is the *only* way of thinking/believing. But I think it is not OK to tell another he/she has failed the Christianity test simply because he/she has different beliefs/opinions.

Heart and Mind??????

Kindly explain the differences here. Heart? Does the heart have a role in thinking?
.
Can you use a more appropriate word other than heart?

OKay. happy

But even if we were face to face, there is no way I can crawl into the mind (thoughts) or heart (emotions) of another. None of us can ever totally know anyone. How then, can I dare to judge?
.
Well, we could go on for quite a while on that statement; but, my question was about mind and heart and you've answered what it means as you're using it here.
.
There is a study, Cognitive Science, that you might know about.
.
You are dividing one set of thoughts from an other in order to show a differentiation between some kind of cathected behavior in relation to something that is dealt with on a rational basis. This division, you might also know, is an issue with some neuro-scientists. Especially with those who subscribe to the supernatural relationship a person might have with the so-called spirit world. I know it may be off topic; but, I needed to understand your use of those words in order to understand the discussion that is being carried out here.
.
Thanks for clearing it up for me.

In response to I don't get it posted by pink101:

Emotions do not necessarily *follow* thought. Sometimes emotions occur before thought. Take the fight or flight reaction. You react to a stimulus (a perceived threat) with no thought about the validity of the threat. You just react.
.
Thought can override emotion, and emotion can override thought.
.
Further, what I feel through my (one's) emotions may or may not be led by any kind of logic. I've never met a frog I didn't love. It that rational? happy
.
However, in the context here, I was making a distinction between an approach thich is all or mostly in the head--rules and regulations, prescribed behaviors and rituals. I was making a case for what is learned through experience, through emotional relationship (as opposed to passive, disinterested observation).

Also, this can be discussed in the freudian sense of Super Ego, Ego, and Id as well as in other ways.
.
I think emotions are all in the mind.

Emotions are in the mind, but they arise from the right side of the brain, the creative, non-rational side. Intellect is from the left side--ALL logic and rationality.
.
The ego (speaking simply) is the primitive part of the brain which is only concerned with survival. The ego tends to prefer the intellect over emotion because it leaves no grey areas, no unnerving possibilities. happy

PS: There's an area of the brain between the left and right lobes. This area assists communication between the two lobes. AND this area is more well developed in women than in men--implying that women are better in synthesizing emotion and thought into one.

I have known a few women in my life who have allowed me the intimacy of interactive thinking. I always marked it among the greatest of pleasures for me. And, they acted like it was for them as well. I think it is elementary to the greatest gifts we have with life. Too bad that it is legislated out of our life in so many ways.

I enjoy mental intimacy--it is great.
