I'd like to add that I don't think it's appropriate for anyone to use this tragedy to score points for OR against political figures, religious figures, and particularly God. Tragedy has been a reality of human existence since the beginning of the human race. And this has been acknowledged by all of the world's major religions. God is extremely disinterested in human affairs and their disruption by murderous impulses, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, etc. It is more comforting to know that God does not exist. We should take protestantism to the next level and protest what the idea of God does to us. Layering faith in a fairy tale God over our survival instincts may take valuable seconds away in an emergency, and it is the best reason to abandon petitioning the ether with prayer in a crisis. If you can, visit and help those touched by tragedy but do not drag them into a depressive cycle by reminding them that their idea of God let them down again. -- posted by HeadZenCards

Is it wise to ask God to give extra comfort to certain people only? Oliver is responding to an event straight from the shoulder and that can be very good. Sitting around and waiting for the time when we all know what is proper to say and what is proper to keep to ourselves might be playing into the wrong hands. . What? Are things so sacrosanct that they cannot be dealt with while they still hot? That might have been the problem on VT's campus when the administration didn't close the campus down immediately after the first two murders were discovered and the murder weapon was missing. I heard an ex-employee of VT explaining the administrative beuracracy there and how they cannot make fast decisions--everything has to be cleared up the hierarchy before it is released. Students were unaware that a murder might be loose on campus. No alarms had been sounded. Everything appeared to be normal and, then, all hell broke loose. . Now is as good a time as any to get your thoughts on the table. I might not agree with Oliver; but, I certainly think he has a legitimate right to make his points. You have put your thoughts on the table.
