» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Scoring points

I'd like to add that I don't think it's appropriate for anyone to use this tragedy to score points for OR against political figures, religious figures, and particularly God. Tragedy has been a reality of human existence since the beginning of the human race. And this has been acknowledged by all of the world's major religions.

Let's just mourn for these students and their families. And (yes) pray for them.

In response to Government Black-Op? posted by Migisi:
Conspiracy theories already? Can they bury their dead first?? Sheesh!
A conspiracy.. yes.. a theory?.. not at all...
enjoy today for tomorrow we are dead....It is you that pleads for us to live for today.. mourning strangers will not bring them back as that only serves the ego. In a few months, the slaughtered will be a distant memory and others will become front page news... and so... the world turns...

mourning strangers from a humanist is a waste of time and energy - since their time is limited....

Ecclesiates 9:15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

» HeadZenCards - The God Who Was Not There

In response to Scoring points posted by BrianTubbs:

God has been proven to be less than all-powerful and less than all-loving because human beings suffer and die.

God is extremely disinterested in human affairs and their disruption by murderous impulses, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, etc.

It is more comforting to know that God does not exist. We should take protestantism to the next level and protest what the idea of God does to us.

Layering faith in a fairy tale God over our survival instincts may take valuable seconds away in an emergency, and it is the best reason to abandon petitioning the ether with prayer in a crisis.

If you can, visit and help those touched by tragedy but do not drag them into a depressive cycle by reminding them that their idea of God let them down again.

I'll respond to this in a different thread, HeadZen. I don't mind having this discussion with you at all. I just want to keep this thread for Virginia Tech specifically.

In response to The God Who Was Not There posted by BrianTubbs:

Are prayers specifically designated for those touched by the murders at Virginia Tech meant to let God know he screwed up again?

Is it wise to ask God to give extra comfort to certain people only?

Shouldn't we Protestant's pray to help get our own minds around senseless tragedy, tragedy that an all-powerful being could have stopped?

Pray?
.
I don't know about that; but, we might do whatever we can to get our minds around tragedies like this so we can gain some real understanding. Otherwise, we're left to the ideologues who have all the answers they learned in their theosophical circles.

In response to The God Who Was Not There posted by HeadZenCards:

This is exactly what I was talking about. Instead of showing concern for the victims and their families, Oliver here has chosen to use this tradegy as an excuse to rant about how God isn't all powerful and yadda-yadda-yadda, which I find to be nothing more than selfish and heartless.

Oliver please, if you are gonna bitch about God, don't bring these tragedies into it within days of the events unfolding. You're no better than the people who told those 9/11 jokes on September 12.

» pink101 - More Righteous Than Oliver

In response to The God Who Was Not There posted by EvilChihuahua:
.
You might be allowing yourself to be part of a strategy that doesn't serve the public good.
.
Oliver is responding to an event straight from the shoulder and that can be very good. Sitting around and waiting for the time when we all know what is proper to say and what is proper to keep to ourselves might be playing into the wrong hands.
.
What? Are things so sacrosanct that they cannot be dealt with while they still hot? That might have been the problem on VT's campus when the administration didn't close the campus down immediately after the first two murders were discovered and the murder weapon was missing. I heard an ex-employee of VT explaining the administrative beuracracy there and how they cannot make fast decisions--everything has to be cleared up the hierarchy before it is released. Students were unaware that a murder might be loose on campus. No alarms had been sounded. Everything appeared to be normal and, then, all hell broke loose.
.
Now is as good a time as any to get your thoughts on the table.
I might not agree with Oliver; but, I certainly think he has a legitimate right to make his points. You have put your thoughts on the table. Are you more righteous than Oliver?
.
:)
