» pink101 - Politics of Personal Destruction

.
The Politics of personal Destruction is an appropriate concept to bring up in this thread. Imus is the victim.
.
The dirty work of this activity is done in the press. It's the court of public opinion. The victim is never truly clear of any guilt. It makes me think of what the apostle Paul said when he was thankful for the law so that he might understand the idea of sin. And, to have been a victim makes you aware of what it means for an innocent person to be sacrificed in court. Attorneys can be a dirty bunch and the biblical account of Jesus trial is the example. Almost impossible for a non-victim to grasp even though they THINK they get it. They do not. The dirty work that was done to Jesus was not done in the official court of Pilot--but it was done in the minds of the people.

» Migisi - Elvis then, rap now

In response to Despicable posted by pink101:
.
There is a vast difference between Elvis and Rap. In fact, there is no comparison.
.
Ah, but there is...
.
Rap music is almost 100 percent sub if not extra-cultural. Elvis may have been a mite riske'; but, he in no wise attacked main line culture the way Rap does.
.
http://www.punk77.co.uk/punkhistory/elvi...
"Rock has always been about social and cultural conflict ever since its birth in the boogie blues of artists such as John Lee Hooker. The social alienation and angst of the black experience permeated the predominantly white middle class rock 'n' roll. That was until whitey in the shape of Elvis took control and introduced new brands of alienation like parents, society and girls along with clothes and attitude to symbolise that alienation.
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presl...
"...The singer was considered to represent a threat to the moral well-being of young American women, because "Elvis Presley didn't just represent a new type of music; he represented sexual liberation."[51] In 1956, a critic for the New York Daily News wrote that popular music "has reached its lowest depths in the 'grunt and groin' antics of one Elvis Presley." The Roman Catholic Church denounced him in its weekly magazine, America , in an article headlined "Beware Elvis Presley."[52]...
.
"...Social guardians blasted anyone responsible for exposing impressionable teenagers to his "gyrating figure and suggestive gestures." The Louisville chief of police, for instance, called for a no-wiggle rule, so as to halt "any lewd, lascivious contortions that would excite the crowd."[55] Even Priscilla Presley confirms that "his performances were labeled obscene...
.
"... Due to his controversial style of song and stage performances, municipal politicians began denying permits for Presley appearances. This caused teens to pile into cars and travel elsewhere to see him perform. Adult programmers announced they would not play Presley's music on their radio stations due to religious convictions that his music was "devil music" and to racist beliefs that it was "nigger music." Many of Presley's records were condemned as wicked by Pentecostal preachers, warning congregations to keep heathen rock and roll music out of their homes and away from their children's ears (especially the music of "that backslidden Pentecostal pup.")..,
.
..."In August, 1956 in Jacksonville, Florida a local Juvenile Court judge called Presley a "savage" and threatened to arrest him if he shook his body while performing at Jacksonville's Florida Theatre, justifying the restrictions by saying his music was undermining the youth of America...."
.
... It is despicable the way that drug infested subculture is encouraged to do so much damage to American society.
.
You do know Elvis was a habitual drug user, and died of an overdose, yes?
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvis_Presl...
..."There was little disagreement in fact between the two principal laboratory reports and analyses filed two months later, with each stating a strong belief that the primary cause of death was polypharmacy, and the BioScience Laboratories report...indicating the detection of fourteen drugs in Elvis's system, ten in significant quantity."...
.
..."In 1977 alone, his personal physician Dr. George Constantine Nichopoulos (usually referred to as "Dr Nick") had prescribed 10,000 hits of amphetamines, barbiturates, narcotics, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, laxatives, and hormones."

I'm sorry, Phil, but I can't quite wrap my head around that. He opened his mouth and bad things came out. He had a choice. He could have chosen to use respectful, non-racist, non-sexist words. This is not the first time he has used his mouth as a weapon.
.
Yes, there are others in the media who are equally guilty, but that doesn't make Imus a victim, either--just an easy target.
.
peace and love,

I certainly understand the side that faults Imus. Like I said in my first post here, he is a jerk.
.
But, on the other hand, this situation is being used to bridle free speech. And, Imus is the sacrifice that is being made on the altar of P.C..

I think there's a difference between free speech and verbal spewing. Imus spews.
.
What about being responsible? What about considering the consequences of one's actions before spewing? What about trying to speak in a way which invites dialogue and promotes understanding, instead of dividing people?
.
If you supported people owning firearms and you knew someone who habitually took his rifle into his backyard at midnight to fire off rounds into the neighbor's windows, would you be talking about the abridgement of his rights if he was arrested for public endangerment?
.
The thing is, the sort of thing Imus does seems dishonest to me. His words say he doesn't much like anyone who isn't a middle class male of his class who agrees with his views. So, if that's how he really feels, why doesn't he just come out and say it, instead of taking verbal pot-shots at people?
.
And, if he believes there is a better way of doing something, why doesn't he use words in a constructive way, to affect positive change, instead of spewing?
.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle

A little closer to home.... There was a certain poster who often resorted to very hateful remarks and name-calling. Did you sympathize with him, seeing him as a "victim"? Or did you, like others here, complain to management?

I am in no way trying to excuse Imus for any of his remarks.
.
My point--entirely--is that this situation is being used as an opportunity to promote politically correct speech and, thereby, to control what gets said in the dominate media. MSNBC has been the major voice of opposition to the right wing FOX Cable voice.
.
By the way, we just watched a movie last night that touches on the problem. You might like it as it deals with police officers. It's CRASH. Check it out if you haven't already seen it.

Given the swill that both networks air (especially FOX), I seriously doubt that MSNBC or FOX care about politically correct speech or controlling what's said. They're merely competing for ratings and advertiser dollars, and they'll do whatever it takes. It's always about filthy luker.
.
Kinda reminds me of the 'hits' discussion we had about Suite some time ago. The more outrageous the discussion, the more hits logged, hence Suite could market how active the site was and attract more advertisers. So, they tolerated (even encouraged) obnoxious behavior.
.
CRASH sounds good. I'll have to add that to my must-see list.

True nuff. One man's treasure is another man's trash. Swill: "something suggestive of slop or garbage".
.
Click, click, click... channel change, or turn it off. And I don't even have to leave my chair to do it.

But, I'm not here to argue.

Me neither. Point made.
