Yes--the history you related parallels what was happening here in Vermont. There were no lunber barons, but there was, and is, a logging industry. Vermont also quarries marble, slate and granite, and in the early days, this was almost as bad as working in a coal mine. And those who make a living as farmers also sometimes want to cut loose on the weekend.

And yes, alcoholism does hit hard on those in economic straits. But alcoholism is by no means confined to the lower classes alone. Around here, alcoholism seems to be taking root at an alarmingly early age--kids in the 5th grade in Juvie court for possession of alcohol. That just breaks my heart.
