In response to See & Hear It posted by Migisi:
.
This is the famous passage in which Jesus tells his disciples why he uses parables.
.
I think it requires further consideration in light of the application to which Migisi put it.
.
Brother Jones and I were holding a polite conversation--however directed--regarding the ugliness of fascism. He took offense as though I were bullying him and so, he pulled out.
.
Sometimes, when we are so direct that persons cannot fail to see their involvement, they run away and hide--or--it just bounces off their forehead as though they do not see or hear it.
.
So, should we have directed our thoughts in parables so that the implicated don't get the feeling they are being bullied?
.
Here is an interview with the author of the book I recommend so strongly to everyone:

A nonconfrontational approach worked for Jesus most of the time, and led folks to ask questions about his story's meaning. Evenso, those who were exposed in Jesus' parables got the message loud and clear and, yep, they were offended. Somebody always will be.
.
Good interview. Note that Hedges specifically identifies the 'fanatical' Religious Right. The 'Dominionists', in particular. Not the average Christian you might sit next to in church. However, he does recognize that the average Christian is influenced by the fanatical Right when they're suffering under stress, despair, and depravation. According to him, they're 'perfect fodder' for the fanatics.
.
An aside: Do the 'happy face' and 'sad face' icons still work for you? Or has Suite discontinued them?

I believe the sword in Romans 13 is a symbol of government's power to execute justice. It refers to the strong arm of the state. The power of the state to enforce laws and to protect its people.

So, Brian, glad to see you're up and taking nourishment.

But, why don't you give us your version of who the government is in the United States of America. I think that will settle any confusion some of us might have about your position on Romans 13.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Hitler

Trying to catch up on these posts. Here are some quick comments on Hitler...

1) Hitler played German Christians. No doubt about that. However, Adolf Hitler's theology, philosophy, and policies are hardly representative of Christianity. Just because someone claims to be doing God's will doesn't mean that he, in fact, is.

2) Not all Christians went along with Hitler. Read up on Dietrich Bonhoeffer when you get a chance.

3) One of the reasons that Hitler was able to manipulate Christian churches and Christian leaders in Germany is because of what was happening in the Christian community in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Protestant Christianity was moving away from the Bible as being divinely inspired and authoritative. High criticism was in full swing, along with all the doubts that Darwinism was causing in the minds of many Christians. This identity crisis or faith crisis that Christians were having was MOST felt in Europe - especially in Central Europe.

**Point 3 should NOT be construed to suggest that liberal Christians were inclined to support Hitler. HARDLY! What I am saying is that "Nature abhors a vacuum." When you had such tumult going on economically AND religiously in German society, the stage was set for someone like Hitler. Demagogues thrive in situations like that.

4) This goes without saying (except for THIS forum and given our present participants happy ), but Hitler was no Christian. It is a favorite tactic of CRITICS of Christianity to hold up Hitler as some kind of strawman mascot for the Christian faith. (This is why Brother Jones was understandably upset earlier in this discussion.) It's nothing but a provocative cheap shot to associate Christian conservatives with Hitler - and there's no basis for it. Adolf Hitler was a manipulative, self-serving madman who lied, cheated, and extorted his way into power - and then continued to use deception, demagoguery, and ruthlessness to maintain power. Are there some pro-Christian quotes that critics can pull out? Yes. But there are also quotes like this...

"Christianity is an invention of sick brains," Adolf Hitler, 13 December 1941

Bottom line...Adolf Hitler was no Christian. He was a brutal opportunist. Let's keep that in mind.

I think you might benefit by reading the links I provided up above.
.
And, if you do, you will see that I come from a place where Hitler started out giving the impression that he was a dedicated Christian. My point is not that Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, D. James Kennedy, et al are Christians--not at all. And, my point is not that Hitler was a Christian--not at all. And, my point is not that George W. Bush is a Christian--not at all.
.
You are misreading me, Brian, and that means your post is far off the mark.
