I'm not saying we can't criticize Christian figures. But you must admit my criticism of Howard Zinn is tame compared to some of the things you've said about George Bush. Bringing this back to the topic at hand, here are some criticisms I would make concerning some of our Christian pastors and teachers of today.... Joel Osteen - good at drawing a crowd and getting people to consider God, BUT.. his sermons are more self-improvement seminar than Gospel. A pastor is supposed to "preach the Word," and Osteen preaches only a narrow portion of that Word. Jesse Jackson - no Gospel message, he's more activist than preacher, also pretty radical in his political views, and has been embroiled in too many allegations of corruption (personal and public)

I wanted to add Chuck Swindoll to the list of those we're talking about. He's a favorite practical pastor-teacher. I enjoy his sermons and his books. » pink101 - Favorite Preachers In response to Swindoll posted by BrianTubbs:. Before I comment on D. James Kenedy, I would like to introduce Umberto Eco to the readers in case any of them are not familiar with him. I first heard of him when I read his book, Foucault's Pendulum. . Eco is well known in certain circles. You can learn a little about him here: . http://www.amazon.com/Foucaults-Pendulum... . and here: . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umberto_Eco . My reason for bringing him up has to do with his description of what it means to be a fascist in his, "Eternal Fascism: Fourteen Ways of Looking at a Blackshirt". I'm reading a book about Fascism and Kenedy is featured in part of it. So, when I make my statements, I'll be sure to give my references. In the meantime, it would be kind of any readers to check Umberto Eco out. I found the following link at where you can read his "fourteen ways". It's not very long--take you five minutes, maybe. . http://www.themodernword.com/eco/eco_bla... . :) . -- posted by pink101

I would like to ask this... Are there Christian preachers with whom you might disagree, but yet you RESPECT? If so, who might they be? « Previous 1 2 3 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
