I hear you. I'm a writer/artist, currently focusing on my painting, and planning for an exhibition later this spring. I *have* to work alone, and like it, but if I do not also balance that with time spent with others (and in service to others) I soon find myself with nothing to say creatively. happy

The "two birds" story is made up of faulty logic.

When we base our choices on faulty logic, we're up for the grabs of those people who take advantage of our gullibility.
.
Be careful who you trust. I tried to teach that to my children when they were still very young.

Ecclesiastes 11:9
Walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes.

Numbers 15:39
Seek not after your own heart and your own eyes.

Ecclesiastes 7:3-4
Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

Ecclesiastes 8:15
Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry.

Was it Haninah ben Teradion?

Twice-Pardoned: I checked your quote (re what I call the budgies in bondage) and found this related one:

"One is taught in accordance to one's fitness to learn."

» Twice__Pardoned - not I

I have no problem with 'working' with other people... after all I do have a music group, a wife, a job where I work with others... etc... I PREFER to work alone because I am more productive and if I decide that 'I' need to rest I don't have to worry about slowing others down. People feel different at different times, so our paces are different.

.
The teacher says, "So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?"
.
I don't buy that. I seem to be all alone in not giving the teacher here so much respect. In my mind, he makes a lot of poor assumptions about life. That is, most likely, because he comes out of a tribal social system. Primitive thinkers all tied up in patriarchical bull roar. He has let his testosterone get the better part of his mind.
.
We live for each other and through our relationships with each other. We are part of each other and we learn who we are as we relate with each other. For we see ourselves in the other.
.
Generally, the teacher presents a false picture of reality. He is setting the reader up to buy into his final pitch.

I agree that living for oneself alone leads to a hollow and meaningless existence. BUT, if a person takes no satisfaction in the ordinary parts of daily existence he/she is also doomed to despair, alienation, and anomie. Much of life is made up of sweeping floors, washing dishes, taking out the trash, and holding down a job. If we don't enjoy these things, if we don't see some purpose to them beyond just getting through the moment, that, to me is hell on earth.
