I live just a few miles West of I35 in Round Rock where the hill country has some dramatic views and it seems Austin is the only major city which is actually set into the hill country, unless you count the extremely north west borders of San Antonio. I was not aware that the Rio Grande Valley had that kind of terrain. What is the nearest town? i am just an oldtimer for the Lord. -- posted by Brother_Jones » _Boanerges_ - another good book Thats Just Your Interpretation: Responding to Skeptics Who Challenge Your Faithby Paul Copan http://www.amazon.com/Thats-Just-Your-In... Editorial Reviews Each of the twenty-two chapters provides succinct answers and summary points for countering the arguments. Copan's book is accessible for all Christians who want to defend the plausibility of Christianity in the marketplace of ideas. It also includes helpful summary sections, additional resources, and additional documentation in the endnotes for review and discussion. From the Back Cover In our relativistic society, Christians more than ever before are bombarded by skeptical comments such as these. You hear them on college campuses, in the workplace, and from your neighbors and friends. That's Just Your Interpretation provides incisive answers to challenges related to truth and reality, worldviews, and Christian doctrine. Similar to his well-received "True for You, but Not for Me," this book by Paul Copan will help you defend your faith, even when you're confronted with the toughest questions. You'll be able to respond with intelligent, powerful answers that direct people toward a personal relationship with God. "The book is accessible to non-specialists, yet Copan clearly brings to each subject careful research and scholarly reflection." J. P. Moreland, Talbot School of Theology "Paul Copan writes with clarity, force, and insight about the credibility of Christianity." So, my wife of nearly 54 years drops me off at my favorite retreat today, Barnes & Noble. . And, I just happened to see John Shelby Spong's latest book, Jesus For The Non Religious; . http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Non-Religiou... . Well, I took it over to one of the easy chairs and read the preface and bought the book. II will read it and, from the preface, I think you will certainly find it to be a great book. Spong says it is what he has been working on most of his life. The first comment at the head of the preface: . "Deitrich Bonhoeffer once called on the Christian world to separate Christianity from religion and he spoke of something he called 'Religionless Christianity' .... I hope to build on Bonhoeffer's idea and to find a way through the human Jesus but beyond the confines of religion that will lead me into all that I now believe the word 'God' means." . I am almost certain you will find this book of great interest. I am enthusiastic about it. . :) . -- posted by pink101 » dancooper - Dan Cooper In response to Dan Cooper posted by Brother_Jones:
Guess I wasn't too clear in my statements. I live north of San Antonio in Kerr County, with Kerrville being the closest town of any appreciable size. The hills flatten out just a few miles south of here before you get to San Antonio. My trusty old Texas Almanac defines the Hill Country a bit more loosely than I anticipated, as "a popular name for an area of hills and spring-fed streams along the edge of the Balcones Escarpment." That escarpment runs from Del Rio east to about San Antonio, then turns north to the Austin area, where it finds your community. Kerr County is north of the escarpment by a couple of counties, but the hills are highly in evidence here. On the Interstate (I-10) the hills level out well before you arrive in San Antonio, with the town of Boerne being thought of here as being at the very edge of, or actually even beyond the extent of the Hill Country. I think people in Boerne consider themselves within the Hill Country. San Antonio folks usually think of the Hill Country as well to the north of their city. Technically, I guess, Kerr County is within the area designated as the Edwards Plateau, which is the southernmost tip of the Great Plains extending to the Rockies. The Ballcones Escarpment is the line separating the Edwards Plateau from the Gulf Coastal region, with San Antonio and Austin lying right on the escarpment. One more interesting note from my almanac: Balcones is a Spanish word meaning balconies, which is what the hills are supposed to look like from the plains below. I'm not at all sure why I took the time to spell all that out... -- posted by dancooper » dancooper - Dan, John Shelby Spong In response to Dan, John Shelby Spong posted by pink101:
And now that I recall who Migisi is, thanks for the congrats. He is a boy, and doing fine. There is an interesting story concerning his name. My daughter saw a film some time ago and was intrigued by the name of one of the boys in the leading roles. His name was Phenton, and the name was given to my new grandson. When I told my brother of the new arrival's name, he immediately reminded me of where I had heard the name before. My daughter had never heard it before, and I had said I knew of it from somewhere but couldn't remember where. It seems there was a Fenton in our own family history many years ago. It is funny how 'stuff goes around' sometimes, isn't it? Yes, I am familiar with C. S. Lewis, and intend to include some of his work. I am unfamiliar with Frances Shaeffer, though, and will look into him. Thanks, Simon. The Paul Copan book is of particular interest, as I am looking for a book that better provides a look at a more traditional Christian interpretation than the small book I have read, A Search for the Spiritual: Exploring Real Christianity, by J. E. White. Thanks again, everyone. -- posted by dancooper » Migisi - Dan, John Shelby Spong In response to Dan, John Shelby Spong posted by dancooper:

My daughter, Megan, is doing fine and is actually doing far better than I anticipated as a mother. A magic transformation has occurred. It is beautiful, to be sure. "Dad" is a jerk, but is also doing fine, and actually may some day grow into a viable human adult with marginal intelligence. That is an outside chance, but it is my hope, never the less. Your grandson is about a week older than mine. That's pretty neat. What's his name, and how is he doing? "What a doll baby. I helped deliver him the day after Christmas. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect holiday gift." I, too, was in the delivery room and was instrumental in my grandson's birth. It is a unique experience that I did not get to enjoy with either of my two children. Back then they wouldn't have even asked me into the room, but I would have refused if they had. My mistake. This time "Dad" was there, too, but Megan focused on my presence, and I held her hand tightly with my left, and lifted her back until my right arm was paralyzed with fatigue. If Phen had taken one or two more pushes to show up I don't know what I would have done for arm strength (among other strengths). I felt as though I was quite important in the overall event, and it was a fulfillment that I will remember the rest of my life. Come to think of it, quite a few of the fulfillments I will take to my grave came from my kids' lives. "[A]re you still writing here at Suite? Or not? You did a car topic in the past, didn't you?" Yeah, I did write the Vintage and Classic Car Topic. And past is the proper verb tense. Suite doesn't honor its own contracts with writers, so that's something I hope to avoid in the future. In fact, I am writing very little, and that has become a major problem in my life right now. Thank goodness for Phen or I don't know if my interest in life would be great enough to continue with all the bull----. -- posted by dancooper » pink101 - Colorful In response to Dan, John Shelby Spong posted by dancooper:. It's great when participants add comments and personal observations and experiences to their posts. It makes the discussions more colorful and brings the participant to life. . Ah, the magic of postnatal hormones. (wink) Seriously, you're right. There IS a transformation - like a caterpillar to a butterfly. Sometimes it's not easy for a girl to adjust to her new womanhood. Stay alert and attentive, Papa. She'll need you. . "Dad" is a jerk,... . Hee hee. Spoken like a true Daddy. Makes you wonder why smart girls choose 'jerks' for partners. A puzzlement. You do know, of course, that boys mature way slower than girls. But they never catch up with girls. . My grandson's name is Nolan Scott. Five weeks after his birth, I sent my daughter on a cruise with her girlfriend. She needed the break and the rest. I think every mom oughta be treated to a fun retreat post-delivery. Anyway, when she got back, I had Nolan eating cereal and bananas. He was simply born too big to be satisfied with formula. He's been sleeping through the night ever since - much to everyone's relief. He's pure joy - grinning, gurgling, testing his voice, reaching for toys, eating his fist. And his face lights up when he sees his gramma. . I felt as though I was quite important in the overall event, and it was a fulfillment that I will remember the rest of my life. . Well, you were indeed quite important. Your daughter will remember forever who was there laboring with her. There's nothing that cements a relationship more than sharing the birth experience. I've been labor coach for all three of my grandbabies. And my son-in-law (who, fortunately, is not a jerk) was invaluable. He's such a good daddy. . Suite doesn't honor its own contracts with writers . So I understand from others who quit even before they changed format here. . I am writing very little, and that has become a major problem in my life right now. . A temporary set back, I'm sure. You've got the talent, and that doesn't go away. . Thank goodness for Phen or I don't know if my interest in life would be great enough to continue with all the bull----. . Joy and hope reborn in you. His name is Phen. . Enjoy Phen!! Blink, and he'll be grown. -- posted by Migisi « Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
