» Brother_Jones - Ecclesiastes

In response to Ecclesiastes posted by Migisi:

I guess I'd approach Ecc the same way... Start with the first verse and let it develop itself, as Acts did.

Since we are not dealing with historical narrative in the book, the problem is a philosophical zone where folks are forced to consider whether they have ever actually faced themselves and thought much about their selfish side. There is not much elbow room for comparative religious detective work.

You need to bring over your "Kingdom of God" discussion here. I would suggest that you do a synopsis of what has been said so far so we can go from there.
.
And, someone, perhaps Simon, needs to open a thread on Elesiastes IF such a discussion is desired.

I appreciate your kind words. Sometimes the Spirit moves in directions that we can't anticipate. That is the stuff of the Kingdom, I suppose.

I am sorta intrigued by anyone who would agree to share any of the Old Testament books in depth. It would seem to be a lot of hard work to assemble a cast of friends and helpmates to struggle through such a project. The rub arises due to the idea that God is a person and personable. Sometimes He appears to change course and even repent, Himself. That is certainly a Jewish proclivity to feel that their God is close and personal and extremely careful, and unlike the cosmic wind, impersonal god of the majority of religious liberals who might figure their god is off chasing other priorities this good morning, and such god is not taking a whole lot of interest in such threads or talk as this small communication.

i am just an oldtimer for the Lord.

I agree. Ecc would allow (or require) a different approach than the one taken with Acts - one in which folks could post their personal take on the passages. That could be interesting. As I said, the thread would develop itself. Just an idea.

In response to Well posted by pink101:
Can we agree with Dr McGee's notes, stating the purpose of the Book?

PURPOSE: "The purpose of any book of the Bible is important to the correct understanding of it; this is no more evident than here. Human philosophy, apart from God, must inevitably reach the conclusions in this book; therefore, there are many statements which seem to contradict the remainder of Scripture. It almost frightens us to know that this book has been the favorite of atheists, and they (e.g., Volney and Voltaire) have quoted from it profusely. Man has tried to be happy without God, and this book shows the absurdity of the attempt. Solomon, the wisest of men, tried every field of endeavor and pleasure known to man; his conclusion was, "All is vanity." God showed Job, a righteous man, that he was a sinner in God's sight. In Ecclesiastes God showed Solomon, the wisest man, that he was a fool in God's sight."

Hello everyone,

I would love to attempt an Ecclesiastes thread, but I am certain that verse by verse would not work for this book.

I am also a bit caught up with some other things at the moment and I'm not sure how much time I'd be able to dedicate to it.

I'm off to Barcelona early tomorrow morning and won't be back till late Thursday.
Start up a thread and I'll stop by on Friday to see what's going on and to throw some spokes in!!

Simon

I'm wondering why there isn't a "start a discussion" option for your article here: http://protestantism.suite101.com/articl...
It would've tied your article and a thread together nicely.
