That sounds interesting!!!

In answer to Pink:
That is what I've heard about the US - that there is a lot of evangelical influence. It is an enigma that this has no influence over the entertainment industry, which is the face of the US that the rest of the world see - apart from that handsome face of Bush!!! ;)

You're choking, right?

Perhaps the entertainment industry's ways express our hypocracy.

Pink, I want to pick you up on this:
Perhaps the entertainment industry's ways express our hypocracy.
Have you got any idea why, in a nation so influenced by the evangelicals that the entertainment industry has remained unaffected?
Is it because the evangelicals have their own media?
Is it because even the evangelicals prefer to watch the crime and violence of the TV & movies?
I'd be interested in your thoughts - and Brian's too.

.
That is one tough question to which I doubt we can find a simple answer.
.
America has always been a society made up of a wide range of opinions--both public and private.
.
There is a word I think might be operative here, pandering. It is another word for whoremongering--appealing to base desires.
.
We could go into a lengthy search regarding free speech and greed. But, people do seem to be drawn to sex and violence in the way that moths are attracted to light. Not everyone will pander to the base desires of those people who are starved for illicit satisfaction; but, some will. And, that makes for easy money. Vice becomes a high profit venture for greedy minds. Especially in a system where there is little provision for healthy outlets.
.
I suppose the entertainment industry is controlled by capitalist drives for profit. If you want to make money with little effort, get some good looking woman to take her clothes off and to exhibit her charms. That should bring in an easy profit. It's not just hypocracy--there's a lot of corruption as well.
.
I think your questions require great consideration. There are no easy answers. It's a bad situation with no easy fixes.
.

Technology has made it easier for independents to enter the entertainment world. There have been some great films recently which didn't feature women taking their clothes off or excessive violence.

Sherwood Baptist Church, for example, released a $100,000 film called Facing the Giants. It was pretty good - very inspiring. Grossed between $10-15 million.

This past Christmas, there was The Nativity Story. Before that, One Night with the King (about Esther).

And next Friday (I can't wait) comes Amazing Grace.

I think Christians and morally minded non-Christians or semi-Christians (like Pink) need to step up and PARTICIPATE in our culture. I think that's starting to happen.

My values are based on my internal understandings of my experiences and observations.

So people's values are based on group think.

Is that what qualifies me to be seen as a Semi-Christian?

Brian,
So you would say that the US is actually becoming more influenced by the evangelicals and hence more christian, would you?

Another interesting contrast between the US and Europe is that here in Spain, especially, but to a lesser extent in the UK, evangelical christians lean to the left politically. Many of the members of my church could not understand how Bush could claim to be a Christian while supporting the War in Iraq and other right-wing stances.

Any comments?

Simon

Pink, I was really just taking a humorous jab at you. I wasn't sure what to call you, so I grinned and called you a semi-Christian. happy Labels...gotta love'em.

If I had to label you and do so seriously, I would consider you to be a Deist along the lines of your hero, Tom Paine. Though tempered slightly with your Baptist upbringing.

Is that better?
