» pink101 - post-Christian Western culture?

.
Religious books are well known for presenting wise sayings and in the past they have guided the thinking of whole societies. In our post-Christian Western culture, however, the Bible has been relegated to nothing more than a collection of interesting stories. It has been almost forgotten, even in the Church, that the Bible contains a large amount of proverbs and other types of wisdom writing.
.
I'd like to see Davies' reason for making this blanket statement. We're probably the most religiously influenced generation in the history of the United States since the "Christian" South tried to make a biblical case that slavery was God's will for humanity.
.
Once again, we have that problem with the italics. I know I didn't put it in the title; but, there it is.

» Feature Writer Simon Davies - post-Christian Western culture?

Okay, let me try and answer that.
Maybe I should explain that I am British and living in Spain, and don't have a great deal of experience of the US.

My experience of "the West" is a post-christian society in the UK,the Roman Catholic-influenced materialism in Spain and the US films and TV series which are constantly arriving in both countries. None of these show any evidence of a religiously influenced generation still less a Biblically-influenced one!

I would be interested to hear from you after I spend more time in the Wisdom books to see how much American society is influenced by these ideas.

Please enlighten me on the extent that the US is biblically influenced. In the future I will speak of Europe and not "the West" - I realise that America is a whole different ball game (like "soccer" and "football"!!) happy

God Bless,

Simon

I understand your confusion about America.
.
We are, undoubtedly, the most religious nation in Western Civilization. You can watch evangelical Christian programming on television on several channels 24/7. A drive through most cities will show you churches of every denomination. Our politics is heavily influenced by Christian religion. The peculiar thing is that people who claim to be Christians spend a good part of their efforts in public complaining that they are not given proper recognition.
