» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - 1776-1797

I would, say, however that when you look at the years 1776 to 1797, it's hard to find anyone who equals George Washington in critical influence. All of the leading Founders, as historian Joseph Ellis will tell you, acknowledged Washington as their superior. That includes Ben Franklin.

So....up to 1776, I agree with YOU. GW was important, but not indispensable. However, from the battle of Trenton (December 1776) through the close of Washington's presidency in March 1797, it's hard to find ANYONE who can compete with his central importance.
They don't call him the "Father of our Country" for nothin' happy

Like I said, he was an extraordinary human being. Maybe the thing about him that impressed me most was the fact that he refused to accept the glory that many were only too ready to give him. As it was, it got quite a bit. I think some people still wanted to hang on to the idea of monarchy. There are many today who believe a monarchy is the best way. It's sooooo biblical. happy

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Monarchy...biblical?

In response to 1776-1797 posted by pink101:

I don't think so. God granted Israel a monarchy against His wishes. God's preferred method of government was Rule of Law (mosaic code) and leadership by anointed prophets and judges.

Lest you may have doubts, I am NOT advocating leadership by religious leaders in the USA. Rule of Law, though...definitely. The Constitution.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Primary Characters in History

Pink, pardon the pun, but I wanted to 'resurrect' this thread in light of a video I just posted over at AssociatedContent.com. It's a short - VERY short - video in which I give suggestions to teens that may be struggling with history. I know several like that. happy

This video may give you an idea why I beleive it's better to focus on CHARACTERS rather than the MASSES when studying history.

Good advice.
.
I think that the newer history books are leaning toward the direction of bringing the societal movements into view. George Washington is still seen as the "father" of our country; but, the writers are beginning to include the local snipets. (If that's the right word). And so, readers will see the important part the people play which gives them impetus to take an active role in their society. You don't have to be president to make a difference?

In response to Primary Characters in History posted by pink101:

You don't have to be president to make a difference?

Just ask Ben Franklin, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, and on and on.

It's also true the other way. Just BEING a President doesn't mean you'll make a significant difference worthy of history's attention. Just ask Millard Fillmore.
